He is the author of My Own Country, an NBCC finalist made into a film directed by Mira Nair and the bestselling novel, Cutting for Stone.

    Abraham Verghese har blivit känd för sina stora romaner Cutting for Stone och The Covenant of Water men hans första roman är The Tennis Partner, som är en autobiografisk skildring av hans nya liv som nytillträdd överläkare på ett stort sjukhus i El Paso i Texas. Hans äktenskap håller på krascha och han känner ingen tills han träffar David, underläkare och f.d. tennisproffs. De bildar ett ömsesidigt beroende grundad på tennisspel. Men David är inte bara en f.d. tennisproffs, han också en f.d. kokainist.
    Verghese beskriver livet som medicinare med ett tennisberoende under skilsmässotiden. Han beskriver ömsint den dömda vänskapen med David.
