Mariana Mazzucato is Professor in the Economics of Innovation and Public Value at University College London, where she is Founding Director of the UCL Institute for Innovation & Public Purpose. She is winner of international prizes including the Grande Ufficiale Ordine al Merito della Repubblica Italiana in 2021, Italy's highest civilian honour, the 2020 John von Neumann Award, the 2019 All European Academies Madame de Staël Prize for Cultural Values, and 2018 Leontief Prize for Advancing the Frontiers of Economic Thought. She is a member of the UK Academy of Social Sciences (FAcSS) and the Italian Academy of Sciences Lincei. In 2025, she was appointed Commander of the British Empire for services to economics in the King’s Birthday Honours List. Pope Francis appointed her to the Pontifical Academy for Life for bringing ‘more humanity’ to the world.Her award-winning books include: The Entrepreneurial State (2013), The Value of Everything (2018), Mission Economy (2021), and The Big Con (2023). She advises policymakers around the world on innovation-led inclusive and sustainable growth.    Balsam för hjärnan

   Det här är en bok som tar ordentligt död på några myter. Under flera decennier så har vi fått höra om den fria marknadens överlägsenhet, regleringar hämmar och tar död på det kreativa, bort med gruset i maskineriet så tjänar alla på det. Men är det så? Vad säger historien? Bidrar inte staten till våra samhällen? Mariana Mazzucato för ett analytiskt och med fakta väl underbyggt resonemang genom hela boken där hon i område efter område pekar på en verklighet som något annat. Staten är i de allra flesta fall, kanske alla, den verkligt avgörande aktören i banbrytande och riskfylld forskning, där förväntat genombrott och kommersialisering ligger långt fram i tiden. Staten är den aktör som kan satsa på en långsiktig banbrytande forskningsportfölj, där vissa projekt måste få misslyckas samtidigt som andra kommer att lyckas. Vilka vet man inte förrän efteråt. Apple lyfts fram som ett talande exempel. Geniet Steve Jobs ifrågasätts inte i sitt mer målmedvetna och långsiktiga arbete med att ta fram en mängd produkter med överlägsen design som slår över hela vår glob. Inte alla är medvetna om att den teknik som gör smartphones just smarta är resultatet av banbrytande forskning som bedrivits under flera decennier med hjälp av skattepengar och med en stat som just vågat ta risker, vågat misslyckats, vågat sätta upp ribban högt med vetskapen att allt inte kommer att lyckas och att det är nödvändigt att det är just så. Hur ser det ut idag? Ser vi samma positiva forskning och utvecklingklimat där stat ägnar sig åt banbrytande långsiktig forskning? Eller finns orosmoln? Hur kan samarbetet mellan det statliga och privata fördjupas och förbättras? Hur kommer det sig att skattebetalare får stå för riskerna och utgifterna men sällan får ta del av intäkterna? Det är många viktiga frågor som nyktert och sakligt tas upp som borde intressera de flesta som har ett samhälls-, politiskt- och ekonomiskt intresse. Vi vill väl alla spela i det bästa laget!
