Beskrivning
In international criminal proceedings, the prosecution, defence, and judges all tell stories about the defendant. In doing so, they construct personae that are shaped by the deep script of international criminal law. This deep script divides roles, assigns narrators, sets the stage, provides instructions, rules, and procedures, and comes with traditions, stock characters, typical plots, and narrative structures. Using the International Criminal Court's case against Dominic Ongwen as its focal point, The Deep Scripts of International Criminal Law: Stories about Dominic Ongwen examines how Ongwen became the main character in a variety of stories told by the prosecutor, the defence, judges, Ugandan communities, Acholi cultural and religious leaders, and traditional reconciliation mechanisms in northern Uganda. Bringing together Uganda experts, criminal and international law scholars, and practitioners, this volume brings to light the narratives through which Ongwen has been understood, represented, and judged. It asks what these narratives can tell us about international criminal law, what the personae constructed in Acholi and Ugandan accounts reveal about local understandings of justice, and which deep scripts are mobilized to produce particular representations of Ongwen.
