Beskrivning
This study is the first full analysis of the Qumran wisdom texts. New translations and a full explanation of the background and context of wisdom literature introduce the reader to an important and hitherto little discussed part of the Dead Sea Scrolls. After surveying biblical and extrabiblical wisdom books, the author considers the best and most fully preserved wisdom texts from Qumran. The centrepiece of the book is a discussion of the large wisdom instruction known as Sapiential Work A. Also, the author reflects on the relevance of those texts for the study of early Judaism and Christianity. An appendix treats the Ben Sira scroll from Masada.

'Daniel Harrington provides a synthetic and balanced discussion of most of the Qumran sapiential texts.' - Timothy H Lim, Theological Book Review'This is a new way of looking at the texts and if this volume is representative of the series, it should prove extremely useful to students and others. Beside introductory and survey chapters, there are translations of many of the texts discussed with commentary.' - The Expository Times'Harrington's style is graceful and eminently readable. Both the specialist and the general reader can here immerse themselves in ancient texts and profit from Harrington's unrivaled expertise.' - Internationale Zeitscriftenschau fur Bibelwissenscaft und Grenzgebiete'Harrington's work succeeds admirably in its intention of providing a clear and concise introduction to the Qumran sapiential writings. While its level is suitable for undergraduate students of theology or biblical studies, it offers a helpful introduction to the topic for bible students at all levels.' - Contemporary Review, Sept '97
