Logic of Deception

This insightful book examines the early Christians’ views of language and rhetoric, which it places in the larger theological context of early Christian moral psychology. The culmination of 25 years of study in the fields of Patristics of Early Church History, Susan Wessel explicates the nature of early Christian claims to truth.Wessel studies the works of Gregory of Nyssa, Basil of Caesarea, Gregory of Nazianzus, Augustine and Maximus the Confessor that articulate a way to understand and navigate the intricacies that the logic of the fallen world presents. These early Christians invite us to reconsider the limits of language, to be sceptical regarding the nature of rhetoric, and to cultivate such virtuous emotions as love and compassion for our human flourishing.
