Jorge J. E. Gracia is Samuel P. Capen Chair and Distinguished Professor of Philosophy at the State University of New York at Buffalo. He is author of several books, including Hispanic/Latino Identity (Blackwell, 2000) and How Can We Know What God Means? (2001). He is the editor, with Gregory M. Reichberg and Bernard N. Schumacher, of The Classics of Western Philosophy (Blackwell, 2003). Timothy B. Noone is Ordinary Professor of Philosophy at The Catholic University of America. His books include Ioannes Duns Scoti, Quaestiones super librum Porphyrii, Quaestiones super Praedicamenta (1999).

   En sorts encyklopedi.

   Boken är en sorts encyklopedi över medeltida filosofi. Inledningskapitlet av Jorge J. E. Gracia ger en pedagogisk översikt över vilka filosofiska problem som intresserade de medeltida filosoferna. Därpå följer några tematiska kapitel om katedralskolan i Chartes, filosofi under de karolingiska eran, franciskaner och dominikaner, m m. Huvuddelen består av 138 artiklar om lika många filosofer, varierande i längd mellan en sida och femton sidor eller mer. Filosofer från alla fyra traditionerna behandlas, dvs den katolska, den bysantinska, den islamiska och den judiska. Samtliga artiklar håller hög vetenskaplig kvalitet, och flertalet är därtill pedagogiska. Som sagt, en sorts encyklopedi. Mycket användbar.
