First-Generation College Student Research Studies

Terence Hicks is professor in the Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Analysis and former dean of the Clemmer College of Education at East Tennessee State University. Douglas M. Butler is associate professor in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction in the Whitlowe R. Green College of Education at Prairie View A&M University. Mondrail Myrick is lecturer of economics at the University of North Carolina Pembroke.

In the past, much of the research on first-generation students focused on our deficits…While there is much merit in this foundational work, we have learned over the years that there is also another story to be told—the story of our strengths, of our determination, and of the deep sense of purpose that compels us to keep going. First-Generation College Student Research Studies does just that. I applaud the work of Dr. Terence Hicks and associates for bringing this important project to fruition.
