Beskrivning
Empires’ Echo tells the story of Puerto Rico through the systems that have connected, controlled, and shaped the island for centuries. From carved wooden saints and oral traditions to newspapers, radio, television, and digital platforms, the book traces how communication has organized everyday life. It shows how Spanish and US empires used media and infrastructure—roads, telegraphs, broadcasting networks—not only to connect territories but to exercise power. At the same time, Puerto Ricans adapted these systems in creative ways, using them to build culture, express identity, and challenge authority. Spanning five centuries, the book reveals that communication is more than technology: It is the way people move, share ideas, and make meaning. By placing Puerto Rico at the center of global and Caribbean networks, Empires’ Echo offers a compelling new perspective on how media shapes history, culture, and power

In Empires’ Echo, Eliseo R. Colón Zayas makes a compelling argument about the structuring power of media and communication technologies as tools of control and surveillance, while they also create new spaces of mediation and circulation in which social power is reconfigured through resistance, community building, and contestation. Through historical documents, Colón Zayas finds humanity and the struggle for recognition and citizenship by marginalized social groups that have been historically pushed to the borders of empire and global capitalism. Puerto Rico as terrain of colonial dependency has been able to reinscribe itself through these spaces at the center of regional and global imaginaries and media circulation through cultural contestation and local/national identities.
