In 2018, member states of the African Union signed the African Continental Free Trade Area Agreement (AfCFTA) to implement a single continental market for goods and services and establish a continental customs union. This book discusses regulatory developments across the African continent meant to accommodate and/or further drive economic realities on the ground. The focus here is on the trade in goods.Divided into three parts, the first presents the big picture of Africa's economic integration and AfCFTA's role in this process, addressing cross-border trade facilitation, the shift from Eurocentric to Afrocentric investment policy, and the Agreement's economic and welfare effects. Part II turns to the AfCFTA's dispute settlement mechanism, weighing its debt to WTO procedures against the balance it strikes between state sovereignty and effective adjudication. Part III examines regionalism as a foundation of African economic governance, from Regional Economic Communities and rules of origin to non-tariff barriers, Chinese lending, and prospective investment ties with the Eurasian Economic Union.Written by a combination of academics and practitioners, the work will be a valuable resource for those working in the areas of International Economic Law, International Trade Law, African Law and Development.

Jędrzej Górski, MJur (Warsaw), PhD (CUHK), is an independent consultant in international trade, infrastructure, and government procurement policy and regulation. He has a diverse background in consultancy and research, also covering development finance, and the regulatory aspects of infrastructure and energy sectors. Dr. Górski conducted research at institutions, including the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Melbourne Law School, UCL Australia, and City University of Hong Kong. He also has prior experience with CMS Cameron McKenna LLP in Warsaw. His academic contributions include several co-edited volumes on international economic law and political economy, regional integration, as well as social licence and energy transitions.Makane Moïse Mbengue is Professor of International Law at the Faculty of Law of the University of Geneva and Director of the Department of International Law and International Organization. He is also an Affiliate Professor at Sciences Po Paris (School of Law). He holds a Ph.D. in Public International Law from the University of Geneva. Since 2017, he has been the President of the African Society of International Law (AfSIL). He is also an Associate Member of the Institut de Droit International and a Member of the Curatorium of The Hague Academy of International Law. He is a Member of the ICSID Panel of Arbitrators.Kehinde Folake Olaoye is an Assistant Professor of Commercial Law at the Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU), College of Law, Qatar. Before joining HBKU, she was a postdoctoral researcher and lecturer at the School of Law, City University of Hong Kong. Kehinde obtained degrees in law from the Chinese University of Hong Kong, King’s College London and the University of Ibadan. She is qualified to practise law in Nigeria and worked as an international arbitration and dispute resolution trainee in the Hong Kong office of an international law firm.
