Function of the Fool

First published in 1977, The Function of the Fool is a poetic exploration of the fool''s role in literature and society, showcasing Stuart Evans'' wit, insight, and lyrical mastery. The collection, blending conventional and improvised forms, is divided into five sections: an affectionately satirical look at contemporary England; a descriptive reflection on literary and historical pleasures; a probing inquiry into the relevance of art in a perilous world; a lyrical, personal segment; and a long, intricately structured poem on religious doubt and philosophical uncertainty. A must-read for students of English literature.
