This book explores filmic texts that seek to resist and build resilience, and sustain cultures of resistance. It studies popular Indian cinema, ranging from Dalit representation to the struggles of the precarious class, including the queer community, as they struggle to sustain themselves. The chapters explore these films that represent the communities that resist oppressive practices in nuanced ways. Through Critical Discourse Analysis and semiotic analysis, the chapters unravel these acts of resistance and resilience and open these areas of research for future studies as well. The volume will be of interest to scholars of film and media studies, literature and culture studies, and South Asian studies.

Swapna Gopinath is a Professor of Film and Cultural Studies at Symbiosis Centre for Research in Media and Creative Industries, Symbiosis Institute of Media and Communication, Pune, India. She is a Fulbright fellow and a former visiting Associate Professor at the Department of Art and Art History, University of Rochester, NY. She is a co-editor of Historicizing Myths in Contemporary Indian Cinema, published by Routledge.Neha Jindal is Dean at the School of Media and Communication Studies, Galgotias University, Greater Noida, India. She works around gender and media and writes on cinema and other mediated texts. Her research areas also include media pedagogy and netnography in the media and communication sphere.
