Beskrivning
On the Significance of Religion for Populism interrogates the significant role which religion can play in diverse contexts of political populism by focusing on Türkiye, the UK, and Israel. This book brings together three faith traditions (Judaism, Christianity, and Islam) and several academic disciplines (theology, religious studies, politics, and international relations) to critique the complex relationship between religion and populism. Using a combination of theoretical interdisciplinary perspectives and approaches, theological analysis, and ‘real-life’ case studies, focussing on Türkiye, the UK, and Israel, the authors examine how religion can be itself a purveyor of populism and how it can be a countervailing force in challenging populism. The ‘real-life’ case studies show that various forms of nationalism and hegemonic politics are two key areas where populism and religion can become intricately linked. This cutting-edge volume identifies ways in which secular and religious actors can further develop and enhance their cooperation as a counterforce to populism, providing several important recommendations. On the Significance of Religion for Populism bridges existing boundaries between academics, policymakers, and practitioners. It will provide an important resource for undergraduate and graduate students in peace and conflict studies, international relations, politics, theology, religious studies, and area studies such as Middle East studies, Eurasian studies and European studies.

"This volume could not have come at a better time. The authors unpack the intricate interface between religion and populism at a time when our politics have been shaped by half-truths, and the need for religious institutions to reclaim their prophetic voices is more urgent than ever. The reader is treated to case studies across religious traditions on divisive issues like migration, patriarchy and ethno-nationalism, challenging researchers, policy makers, religious leaders and community practitioners to undertake a reflexive and reflective exercise. The expertise of Kollontai, Göl and Dawson comes through in a compelling way without overshadowing the reader’s own introspection, revealing where we may be accomplices of populism and, importantly, where we might be able to act both through secular and religious platforms. An excellent read for anyone concerned about unchecked populism, and the associated injustice, unfairness, inequality, threat to peace and democracy. Superb, accessible; timely."- Ruby Quantson Davis, Learning and Impact Lead at Peace Direct (International NGO), London Office and Associate Member of Wesley House, Cambridge, UK"Religion is not merely an instrument that populists opportunistically deploy; it can provide the moral vocabularies, collective identities and civilisational boundaries through which ‘the people’, their enemies and the political community itself are imagined. On the Significance of Religion for Populism makes an important contribution by examining these dynamics across Türkiye, the United Kingdom and Israel, while also recognising that religious actors can contest exclusionary populism and strengthen more inclusive forms of citizenship and solidarity. Combining conceptual insight, grounded case studies and practical recommendations, this timely volume will be valuable to scholars and practitioners seeking to understand—and respond to—the complex relationship between religion, populism and democratic resilience."- Professor Ihsan Yilmaz, Research Chair in Politics and International Relations and Deputy Director (Research Development), Deakin Institute for Citizenship and Globalisation, Deakin University, Geelong, Australia
