Beskrivning
This volume explores the practical and ethical challenges of researching online political communication at a time when technology companies are restricting data access to researchers. Each chapter provides practical guidance for students and scholars looking to answer critical questions about how digital and social media shape political communication in an ethically rigorous way. Chapters provide helpful advice on methodological issues such as how to research private messaging apps, the impact of digital decay on the research process, the role of ethnographic and small data approaches in studying online political communication, and the use of trace interviews to include the perspectives of participants. Contributors also discuss the ethical concerns that emerge because of restrictions to data, such as issues of informed consent for users whose contributions are included in research, and how to balance the need to preserve their original meaning without identifying them. Others reflect on harm in social media research, considering the responsibilities of scholars if they identify harmful material and the challenges of ensuring researcher safety.A valuable resource for undergraduates, postgraduate taught, and postgraduate research students, this book will appeal to researchers of online political communication, political communication, digital culture, politics, and journalism studies courses.

Recensioner i media

"The APIcalypse has transformed how we study digital politics. This collection does more than diagnose the problem: it brings together some of the field's leading voices to offer thoughtful, practical and forward-looking methodological solutions."-- Professor Dan Jackson, Bournemouth University, UK"This is an invaluable collection, written by excellent researchers working at the forefront of online political communication. As the editors conclude, this is just the starting point for rethinking our research methodologies and ethical encounters with social media platforms, but what a brilliantly instructive start!" -- Professor Katy Parry, University of Leeds, UK"As platforms close their doors to independent research, this timely and wide-ranging volume shows that political communication scholars still have options: regulatory routes to data access, revitalised qualitative and ethnographic methods, and thoughtful ethical frameworks. This is essential reading for students and scholars navigating the new realities of digital politics."-- Professor Cristian Vaccari, University of Edinburgh, UK
