Beskrivning
Productivity is the key driver of competitiveness and long-term growth in wages and incomes. It also underpins the material conditions on which wellbeing depends. This comprehensive book brings together policy and academic experts to help readers understand which policies have succeeded and which have failed in the crucial quest for productivity growth.Built around a framework for pro-productivity policies based on a unique typology, the book explores a range of significant economies, including in the Americas, Asia, Europe and Oceania, to review decades of policy making and looking to future successes. Current economic, technological, and geopolitical circumstances are assessed in light of the need for innovations to address new technological regimes, ageing populations and climate change.Facing the productivity challenge squarely, this book is essential reading for economists, policymakers, and business leaders.

“Over the past decades, a consensus appears to have emerged on the main determinants of productivity growth both in developed countries and in emerging market economies. Yet we were missing comprehensive analyzes of the design and economic impact of growth policies around the world. This book is a first attempt at filling this gap, by looking very carefully at the growth and growth policy experience of 17 representative countries over the past six decades. An absolute must-read for any scholar or policy maker interested in productivity, innovation, growth and development.”Philippe Aghion, 2025 Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences, Chair of Economics of Institutions, Innovation and Growth Collège de France, France“Countries have much to learn from each others’ experience, even when they might seem to differ greatly in their history and institutions. This book will be essential reading for anyone who wants to understand what drives trends in productivity, and so ultimately living standards, anywhere.”Dame Diane Coyle, Bennett Professor of Public Policy, University of Cambridge, UK"Achieving sustained productivity growth is remarkably difficult. The country studies in this exceptional volume show why context, history, and institutions matter, and why policies that succeed in one setting may fail in another. They also show that even successful productivity policies must evolve as economies change." John Fernald, Schroders Chair in European Competitiveness and Reform INSEAD Business School, France.“Productivity growth has slowed almost everywhere over the past several decades, raising fears that younger generations will fail to exceed or even match the standard of living of their parents. But productivity growth is not an immutable object – it responds to a wide variety of policies -- from tax incentives for investment to government-funded research to how public education raises reading and math scores. This book makes a unique contribution by going beyond the experience of any single country as it brings together lessons from 17 countries and in two summary chapters provides the long-needed comparative overview of which policies have proven to be most effective.”Robert J. Gordon, Stanley G. Harris Professor in the Social Sciences, Northwestern University, United States.“This timely volume will be the global reference in identifying the policies needed to boost productivity growth. By combining a common analytical framework with insightful case studies by top-notch economists, it draws out the rich lessons provided by the policy experiences of other countries while avoiding simplistic universal recommendations.”Philip Lane, Chief Economist, European Central Bank, Frankfurt, Germany
