Beskrivning
The direct lived experience of augmentative and alternate communication users and autistic people has become central to developments in the field of AAC in the last 5 years. This book updates the field of AAC, bringing it into line with current best practice, centring around 3 core principles: safety, connection and communication.Throughout this practical guide, Ali Battye, experienced speech and language therapist, weaves the astonishing personal insights from a nonspeaking full time AAC user, Ember Aura. These provide the ‘why’ for this book. The book includes summaries of current AAC apps, screenshots of edited pages, and templates for personalising AAC vocabularies, note-writing, goal-setting and report-writing. With a focus on neurodiversity affirming practice it addresses the questions of who, what, where, when, how and why we might introduce and support AAC, centring around 3 core principles: safety, connection and communication. Foundational principles such as ‘presuming potential’, ‘modelling without expectation’ and ‘following the joy’ are threaded through every chapter, offering an in-depth reflective learning experience. It concludes with a thought-provoking chapter on nuanced areas of practice, and invites us to approach such topics with humility and an open mind.Packed with practical strategies and supports as well as templates for AAC resources, all in an accessible format, this book is essential reading for speech and language therapists, teachers and parents.

“Reading this book felt incredibly personal. This isn't a book about getting children to communicate differently; it's about understanding them, building genuine relationships and creating environments where they feel safe enough to communicate in their own way. What I love most is how accessible the book is. Ali takes complex ideas and explains them with warmth, compassion and practicality, always keeping the individual at the centre. This isn't simply a book about AAC; it's a book about seeing people differently it reminds us to stay curious, to listen more and to recognise that every individual deserves to be understood. I know this is a book I'll come back to time and time again not because it has all the answers, but because it encourages us to keep asking better questions.”-Dipaley Patel, parent, Speech and Language Associate Practitioner, and Founder of Happy Chatters and Ashley’s House “I read this book as a professional who works with children who are speaking and nonspeaking and as a parent of a child who is Autistic. New knowledge is presented in a simple, easy to understand and relatable way. I appreciated the permission the book gives to slow down and take time within my practice, especially in what has become a fast pace therapeutic world where we ‘need’ to have all the answers right now. Reading this book gently challenged me to reflect on my own practice. I felt humbled by how my own lived experience shapes my practice but also empowered to for steps I can take to improve. I think our practice has become so much about the speech and language that we have forgotten the ‘therapy’ aspect and need for safety and connection. As a parent, thank you! Thank you for taking the time to write this book and advocating for neurodivergent affirming practice (and society!!) and sharing the challenges always surrounding us as we navigate social expectations. There is a gentle theme throughout the book that I healed a part of me as a parent who is still fighting for my child's needs, a theme that reminds us of our humanity and the value of connection, safety and communication always. Thank you.”-Ruth Smith, parent and Speech and Language Therapist
