Beskrivning
Histories of Art Education & Disability – intersectional and international perspectives brings a range of international and intersectional and Indigenous perspectives to study the historical relationship between disability and art education in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries.Based on the premise that disability has been underexamined in historical accounts of art education, it shows how disability intersects with gender, race and colonialism in histories of art education; demonstrates what underexplored narratives reveal about the nature of art and its education; and questions what kinds of historical representations have been marginalized in histories of art education. Although art education is frequently aligned with inclusive pedagogies and practices, critical engagements with disability, critical disability studies, and the role of disabled people have remained tangential to readings of historical and archival material. Recognising the dominance of Western, colonial, and ableist perspectives in accounts of the subject’s history, this book extends previous writing on histories of art education to critically examine a range of contexts that attend to contemporary debates regarding identity, intersectionality, pedagogy, and representation. It will be of interest to all scholars and students working in the fields of disability studies, art education, art history, and sociology.
