Beskrivning
The Routledge Handbook of the Cultures and Heritage in the Carpathians offers a comprehensive exploration of the Carpathian Mountains, a region that spans Austria, the Czech Republic, Poland, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, and Ukraine. Through a cross-disciplinary lens, the handbook examines the enduring practices, material culture, and social dynamics that define the Carpathian communities, while also addressing the challenges of preserving and reinterpreting their cultural heritage in the face of modern sociopolitical and economic pressures.Offering an analysis of the rich cultural heritage of the area, shaped by centuries of historical relations, mobility, and shared traditions, the handbook brings together contributions from an interdisciplinary background to provide a multi-faceted analysis of key themes such as rural and urban life, shepherding traditions, foodways, trade networks, religious practices, folk beliefs, seasonal rituals, and inter-community relations. The book demonstrates how local communities are engaging in experiencing the common and shared heritage legacy and offers awareness of local, regional, and national features. Integrating archival research, ethnographic fieldwork, and sociological data, it also makes previous research - much of which existed only in national languages - available to a global audience. An invaluable resource for understanding the region’s past, present, and future, this handbook is an essential reference work on the cultural heritage and sustainable development in one of Europe’s most historically rich and diverse regions. It will of interest to researchers in the fields of cultural anthropology, ethnology, Central and Eastern European studies, transnational heritage and heritage conservation.
