Beskrivning
What does it mean for a theory of time to be truly dynamic? This book develops and defends Existence Presentism as a maximally dynamic metaphysical theory of time. The authors begin by surveying major theories of time, arguing that some are more dynamic than others. They demonstrate that existing dynamic theories, including standard presentism, growing block, and moving spotlight views, fail to adequately capture genuine dynamism. In response, they elaborate and defend Existence Presentism, showing how it explains why reality is dynamic and avoids the "frozen world" problem through an ontology of powers and dispositions. Addressing key metaphysical challenges, the authors reconceive causation in terms of production and dependence rather than cross-temporal relations. They extend this approach to develop a process metaphysics that handles truth, reference, and persistence without relying on relations between present and non-present entities.Existence Presentism and Dynamic Time offers a comprehensive framework for understanding time as fundamentally dynamic, sketching the foundations of a complete dynamic metaphysics accessible to researchers and graduate students working in metaphysics and philosophy of time.
