Beskrivning
For more than fifty years, Max Essex has stood at the front lines of the world’s epidemics. As a pioneering AIDS researcher and distinguished microbiologist, Essex was among the first to link retroviruses to AIDS, to prove that HIV could be spread through bodily fluids, and to identify the protein that became the global standard for HIV screening. His work helped shape how the world understands and prevents viral disease, especially across the African continent. In Pandemics and Politics, Essex blends personal memoir with scientific history. He revisits six viruses that defined his career and transformed global health: Venezuelan equine encephalitis (VEE), feline leukemia (FeLV), human T-cell leukemia (HTLV), hepatitis B (HBV), human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), and SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19. Three cause cancer, three drive immunosuppression, and two – HIV and COVID – reshaped societies profoundly as they claimed lives.Essex reflects upon the monumental achievements of human medicine alongside the rising challenges of scientific denialism and misinformation, global inequity and prejudice, harmful health policies and more through the lens of the viruses that impact us most. Pandemics and Politics: A Scientist’s Memoir offers a compelling perspective on discovery and controversy, and a look at what these six viruses reveal about the epidemics of the future.

Recensioner i media

"For 50 years princesses and presidents pulled Max Essex out of his Harvard laboratory to fight deadly pandemics haunting their communities. Pandemics and Politics tells, humbly and in great detail, the stories of how he and his team solved great mysteries and saved countless lives." - John Donnelly, Author of Lifeline: The Story of PEPFAR, the Greatest Humanitarian Initiative of Our Time "Max Essex's lifetime of research is science at its finest. This book is both a testament to the best of medical research and a powerful lesson in how the destructive forces of denialism and misguided policy can impede sound public health practice." - Robert C. Gallo, MD, University of South Florida, and Co-Founder, Global Virus Network "Max Essex has written a memoir that beautifully reflects his unique gift for communicating complex ideas with clarity, warmth, and humanity. Part scientific bildungsroman, part travelog, part medical detective story, Pandemics and Politics is most of all the story of how a shared commitment to public health has knit together a vast and diverse global community." - Michelle Gavin, former US Ambassador to Botswana and Ralph Bunche Senior Fellow for Africa Policy Studies, Council on Foreign Relations "Essex takes us on a rousing journey across pathogens, geography, and time. His life's work is a model not only for young scientists, but for policymakers and science readers worldwide. We all owe him a profound debt of gratitude – not just for this magnificent book, but for making our world a safer, fairer place." - Lawrence Gostin, Georgetown University, and Director, WHO Collaborating Center on Global Health Law "This is one of the most interesting memoirs I have ever read. The contribution Max Essex has made to human and animal health is unequalled – and here is that story, beautifully written and, at times, intensely moving. A wonderful book." - Sir Alexander McCall Smith, Author of The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency series and other novels
