Abortion trail activists are national and transnational organizations and movements that enable access to safe abortion – this open access book adopts a global perspective to explore their historic contribution to reproductive justice, their innovative work, and the continuing and emergent problems they face. Deirdre Duffy offers the first dedicated analysis of both the historic and on-going relationship between groups supporting access to abortion and abortion politics, drawing on theoretical perspectives and debates including post-colonialism, feminist anarchism and health activism. Challenging assumptions about the achievements of pro-choice politics, Duffy examines the race-based exclusions within and created by dominant historic pro-choice narratives, critiquing the prochoice movements’ whiteness, and the limitations of a focus on legal change. Case studies are drawn from across the Global North and South, including examples from Argentina, Kenya, Poland, the Netherlands, and Ireland. Deirdre Duffy is Senior Lecturer in Sociology (Global Social Inequalities), Lancaster University, UK. She is the author of Evaluation and Governing in the 21st Century: Disciplinary Measures, Transformative Possibilities, (2017), and has written for The Conversation, The Irish Times and The Guardian.

Duffy’s theoretical positioning on trails urges the reader to understand their complexity beyond the infrastructure of how abortion trails operate and to examine the context in which they exist, the narrative framings that they represent, and their distinguishable political praxis. The book challenges the reader to consider the tension between state-sanctioned care, and its stagnant nature, and the agile, fluidity of abortion care outside of this, often provided within abortion trails and the political meanings tied into this tension about what abortion care is and should be as centred within a feminist praxis. The book is essential reading for those interested in abortion politics, reproductive justice and abortion care. It urges us to examine the positioning of abortion care and the unique place that abortion trails hold in providing abortion care that centres bodily autonomy.
