Beskrivning
This unique collection of 24 essays from multiple generations of German historians offers new perspectives on the various transformations in thinking about the history and historiography of German-speaking Central Europe from the Enlightenment to the present. The authors address Germany's complex modern history through case studies and methodological reflections on the various paths Germany took into the (post-)modern age, from its central role in the Enlightenment and Age of Revolution through the colonial era, the world wars, and globalization.Based on the newest trends in historiography and inspired by David Blackbourn’s generative contributions to the field, Paths of German History from the Enlightenment to the Present is organized along five major themes that cut across conventional chronological and geographic divisions. They address the ambiguous concept of modernity; tackle the question of whether German history is particular from others; explore the meaning of nature and the environment in this country’s past; reexamine the place of civic cultures and religion in German society; and situate German history in global, transnational, and transatlantic contexts. As a result, readers will gain a multi-faceted understanding of the historical opportunities and challenges faced by Germany, Europe, and the world between 1800 and the present, while being introduced to important theoretical and methodological turns in the field over the past four decades.
