Historical Epistemology

A comprehensive selection of Marx W. Wartofsky’s essays from the late 20th-century—many previously unpublished—on the pioneering concept of historical epistemology. This posthumous volume revives Wartofsky’s influential ideas, offering critical insights into the evolving nature of knowledge and cognition. Wartofsky’s work explores how modes of cognition and knowledge are shaped by historical, social, and technological contexts. Drawing from Marx’s historical materialism, he argues that our understanding evolves through practical activity and the use of artifacts, which mediate human cognition and representation. The writings are organized into five thematic sections: foundations of modeling and representation; intersections of science, theory, and history; aesthetics and political praxis; historical psychology and medical philosophy; and applied science and technology. Throughout Wartofsky addresses enduring philosophical questions, such as realism without essentialism, the social construction of norms, and the epistemological implications of digital technologies and artificial intelligence. Notable writings include reflections on art as cognitive praxis, the politics of style, and the heuristic dimensions of scientific discovery. The lucid style and interdisciplinary approach ensures Wartofsky’s work continues to be relevant and accessible to scholars across philosophy, political theory, psychology, and technology studies. It is essential reading for anyone working in epistemology, Marxian thought, and the philosophical challenges posed by contemporary science and society.
