Blending history, folklore, and personal recollection, Prairie Cajuns: Voices of Pointe Noire offers the first in-depth portrait of Louisiana’s prairie Cajuns. Recognizing that the Cajun culture is not a monolith, author Donna McGee Onebane sheds light on a small community in southwest Louisiana—Pointe Noire—where the traditional culture and language are fading from memory. Grounded in oral histories with tradition bearers, Onebane’s work documents and preserves their voices while challenging the stereotypes that arise when cultural symbols obscure lived experience. Writing as both folklorist and interpreter, she reveals the value of storytelling itself and illuminates the broader significance of everyday cultural practice. The stories that emerge encompass the full spectrum of everyday life—from ordinary men and women who lived quietly in homes and fields, to legendary figures, including the notorious Civil War deserters and agents of folk justice, the Jayhawkers, and their loup-garou (werewolf) ally; the twelve-year-old candidate for sainthood Charlene Richard; and acclaimed Cajun musicians, such as the celebrated Iry Lejeune and the Lejeune family, whose front-porch gatherings sparked an extraordinary flowering of creativity. Identity lies at the heart of Prairie Cajuns. What begins as an act of cultural recovery becomes an exploration of who the folk of Pointe Noire are—and who Onebane is as one who lived among them. Like many who turned away from their heritage, she now confronts the lasting effects of that decision, reckons with the unrecoverable past, and seeks to reconcile her present.
