Brexit Negotiations After Article 50

Alex de Ruyter is Professor and Director of the Centre for Brexit Studies at Birmingham City University, UK. He holds a wealth of research experience and academic engagement in relation to Brexit and areas of regional economic development, skills and labour market issues. Beverley Nielsen is Associate Professor and Director at IDEA Institute at Birmingham City University, UK, where she has worked for the past 10 years as Visiting Tutor, MA Design Management, Director Employer Engagement and Director Corporate Affairs.

This volume brings together contributors from academia, politics, and business in the UK for nine chapters that analyze the process and impact of the UK withdrawal from the European Union. They examine the dynamics of the withdrawal process and the opportunities Brexit might offer the UK, as well as the likely impact of Brexit on key sectors of the UK economy. In the first section, they address the constitutional propriety of the referendum and the issues raised by it, the economic effects, the economy and trade post-Brexit, the history of the British Labour Party's attitude towards the European Union, the motivating factors behind the vote from a socioeconomic and psychological perspective, and issues related to the operation of trading outside of a customs union and the problematic nature of border enforcement to prevent the smuggling of contraband items. The second section considers sector-specific issues, namely impacts on the financial services industry, small and medium enterprises, and the auto industry.
