Beskrivning
This fascinating book follows the 292 miles of the A38 trunk road through ten English counties and some great cities and ports, including Derby, Birmingham, Worcester, Gloucester, Bristol and Plymouth, for much of its length following the route of the Roman road, Icknield Street. There are stories of battles for the throne, the mining that powered the industrial revolution, and early exploration of the New World. As the seasons change month by month, so do the landscapes from the reclaimed mining areas of Mansfield in January to the mists of Bodmin Moor in December, and the wildlife changes too. There are reflection on the biodiversity crisis and the impacts of climate change, but also the great work of volunteers who are recreating wild habitat and reintroducing species that humans have eliminated in the past. .'The Great Thirty-Eight' is like a slice through the country, revealing our history and celebrating our wildlife, with plenty of stories of the remarkable people who have shaped England.

Mer om författaren

Rick Thompson is a former journalist and broadcaster. After gaining an MA in English at Oxford University, he worked for BBC News for many years, starting at BBC Birmingham where he produced and presented regional wildlife programmes as well as reporting the news. He became a senior editor with BBC Television News, working as the Foreign News Editor, then producing the Nine O'Clock News. Rick returned to the Midlands as the BBC's Head of News, Current Affairs and Local Programmes. Later he went back to London to be in charge of news coverage for the World Service. Since leaving the BBC, his consultancy, 'T-Media', has organised dozens of training workshops and development projects in the former Communist countries of Europe, helping to promote independent, high-quality broadcast journalism.  A lifelong birdwatcher, Rick wrote and illustrated a regular column on birds for the Countryside magazine, and for four years he was a member of the Governing Council of the RSPB. He has been asked to moderate many European conferences on the environment, sustainable energy, biodiversity and climate change. He says, "I believe that exposure to nature is incredibly important for people's physical and mental well-being. Getting to know more about the natural world is fascinating. I hope this month-by-month account of a journey from Nottinghamshire to Cornwall through the heart of England will encourage the reader to get out into the natural environment. I also hope readers will enjoy the stories of the towns and cities along the former Roman road, and the key moments in England's history that have been played out along the ancient route.
