      Beskrivning

Many welfare states are now struggling to deal with the issues and tensions raised by the growth of minority ethnic populations and increasing ethnic diversity. The fact that most societies in the developed world are now multicultural raises many challenges for policy and for the delivery of welfare services which most states have yet to address, retreating into forms of institutional racism to deny minorities the services they need. Using the UK as an exemplary case study, this much-needed book combines historical and theoretical approaches to the issue of 'race' and ethnicity within welfare provision, including an examination of how minorities experience welfare in a range of service settings. The book inspires new ways of approaching welfare and social policy, in anticipation of a society that is equal, inclusive, fair and just for all and will make essential reading for students, researchers, practitioners and policy makers

      Recensioner i media

"The title of this text belies the far reaching challenge it poses to the discipline, research base and practice of social policy. Its argument that mainstream social policy has consistently marginalised the issue of 'race' and minority ethnic concerns is well founded when judged against the historical record, the evidence base and contemporary shortfalls in policy and practice. This is a deep exploration of the complexities of diversity and difference that speaks to contemporary concerns about substantive citizenship and social justice." --Professor Charlotte Williams, OBE, Keele University. "'Understanding 'race' and ethnicity' provides a much needed and engaging examination of questions of equity and citizenship in health and social welfare. The book is full of accessible insights and empirical examples that breathe life into longstanding and contemporary debates on race and ethnicity. It is vital reading for anyone interested in, or touched by, the significance of care as a profound human value and a relationship." --Yasmin Gunaratnam, Goldsmith College.
