On 1 September 1939, when Germany attacked Poland, the Wehrmacht numbered 3,180,000 men.It eventually expanded to 9,500,000, and on 8-9 May 1945, the date of its unconditional surrender on the Western and Eastern Fronts, it still numbered 7,800,000. Dr. Nigel Thomas is an accomplished linguist and military historian formerly at Northumbria University, now a freelance military author, translator and military uniform consultant. His interests are 20th century military and civil uniformed organisations, with a special interest in Germany, Central and Eastern Europe. He was recently awarded a PhD on the Eastern Enlargement of NATO. Stephen Andrew was born in 1961 in Glasgow, where he still lives and works. An entirely self-taught artist, he worked in advertising and design agencies before going freelance in 1993. Military history is his passion, and in the past few years he has established himself as a respected artist in this field. Since 1997 he has illustrated several Men-at-Arms titles including MAA 306: Chinese Civil War Armies 1911-49, and a series on the Italian armies of WWII.
