    Beskrivning

This book explores the vast, untapped energy potential of wind over the oceans, which could meet global power demands for the foreseeable future. It highlights existing technologies, including high-speed autonomous sailing ships equipped with hydrokinetic turbines that convert ocean wind power into electricity and hydrogen. These technologies are sufficiently advanced to enable the construction of fleets of energy ships to launch an Apollo-type green energy development project. The book explains the rationale behind proposing autonomous sailing ships as a solution for generating abundant green electricity and hydrogen, aiming to prevent irreversible climate change by 2050. The authors focus on the applications and fundamental physics of steady and unsteady low-speed aerodynamics, specifically concerning lift, thrust, and renewable power generation, while minimizing mathematical complexity. Low Speed Wing Aero-Hydrodynamics: Emission-Free Lift, Thrust, and Power Generation is an introduction to hydronautical power engineering suitable for readers of various expertise levels. It caters to those with non-technical backgrounds concerned about the climate crisis, as well as to students, faculty, and researchers in the field of renewable energy technology.Proposes autonomous sailing ships as a means to generate abundant green electricity and hydrogen;Discusses the aerohydronautical power engineering concepts and tools needed for ocean wind energy conversion;Explains applications and fundamental physics of steady and unsteady low-speed aerodynamics with minimal mathematics.

Prof. Max F. Platzer is an Adjunct Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Professor at the University of California Davis. In 1970, he joined the Naval Postgraduate School as a Professor of Aeronautics and Astronautics, a position he held until 2003. He subsequently taught at the Air Force Institute of Technology from 2003 to 2004. Before this, he worked as the Assistant to the Chief of the Aerodynamics Branch and later became the Chief of the Unsteady Aerodynamics Section at NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center. He also served as the Chief of the Aeromechanics Research Group at Lockheed-Georgia Research Laboratory. He holds a Diploma Engineer and Doctor of Technical Sciences from the Technical University of Vienna. Since 2003, Professor Platzer has been a Senior Partner at AeroHydro Research & Technology Associates. He is the principal author of the books The Green Energy Ship Concept: Renewable Energy from Wind Over Water (Springer, 2021) and Aerohydronautical Power Engineering (University Readers, 2012). He has been Editor of the international review journal Progress in Aerospace Sciences since 2006. Professor Platzer has received numerous prestigious awards and honors. In 1965, he was awarded the NASA Superior Achievement Award by Wernher von Braun. He was elected a Fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) in 1992. He received the Outstanding Teaching Award from the Naval Postgraduate School in 1993, followed by the Distinguished Professor Award in 1995. In 1999, he received the Naval Air Systems Compass Award and is a Fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA).Prof. Dr. Dilek Funda Kurtuluş is a Professor at the Middle East Technical University (METU). She obtained her B.Sc. in 2000 and M.Sc. in 2002 from the Aerospace Engineering Department of METU and her joint Ph.D. from École Nationale Supérieure de Mécanique et d’Aérotechnique (ENSMA) and METU in 2005. Prof. Dr. Kurtuluş received the Amelia Earhart Fellow from Zonta International in 2005, the NATO Scientific Achievement Award in 2011, the Turkish Academy of Science Young Scientific Award in 2012, and the Zonta International Centennial Recognition Award of Türkiye in 2019. She is co-owner and co-founder of EKOFLY Tech Spin off company in METU Technopolis since 2013. In addition to her technical expertise, she holds a Master in Law in 2019 from Baskent University, with a specialized focus on Air and Space Law. Her multidisciplinary background is further strengthened by an Executive MBA from Bilkent University in 2024 with specialized training in Competitive Strategy at the University of Michigan’s Ross School of Business, USA. In 2026, she was awarded the rank of Chevalier (Knight) in the Ordre des Palmes Académiques by decree of the Prime Minister of the French Republic for distinguished contributions to education and academic cooperation between Türkiye and France. Her expertise spans across experimental and computational aerodynamics, unsteady aerodynamics, vortex dynamics, aircraft design, micro air vehicles, UAVs, wind turbine aerodynamics and integration of Artificial Intelligence with aerodynamics.Berkan Anılır received his B.Sc. degree in 2021 from the Aerospace Engineering Department of Middle East Technical University (METU), where he is currently a Ph.D. student and graduate Research Assistant. His research interests include unsteady aerodynamics, computational fluid dynamics, and aircraft design.
