Arabs on the Borders of the Fertile Crescent, 9th–4th Centuries BC

This book examines a period of roughly 400 years during which the entire Fertile Crescent was united under a single imperial framework—first Assyrian, then Babylonian and Persian. It offers a detailed historical overview of the relationships between the nomads/Arabs and both the great empires and the settled populations of the region during the ninth to fourth centuries BC.  Its distinctive contribution lies in integrating fixed geographical data with economic, political, and social developments.The discussions draw on a broad array of both literary and non-literary sources, including the Bible, Akkadian, North and South Arabian inscriptions, as well as Aramaic and Greek texts. The study is grounded in direct engagement with the sources in their original languages, and its conclusions are founded on a critical evaluation of each source as a valid historical material. The study demonstrates that the history of their relations with the settled lands forms an integral part of the broader history of the Fertile Crescent.
