INPRO Methodology for Sustainability Assessments of Nuclear Energy Systems: Proliferation Resistance

The INPRO methodology provides a structured approach for assessing the long-term sustainability of a nuclear energy system (NES) across six areas: economics, infrastructure, environmental impacts, safety, waste management and proliferation resistance. First published in 2008, the methodology has been progressively updated and refined to reflect practical experience gained from national assessments, as well as developments in nuclear technologies. This revised INPRO Manual on Proliferation Resistance—the final volume to be updated—clarifies key concepts and provides guidance to assist Member States in performing self-assessments of proliferation resistance in current and prospective NES. The manual also supports the consideration of proliferation resistance throughout the design and life cycle of an NES and presents a more streamlined and user-friendly assessment process consistent with recent INPRO methodology updates. Additionally, this manual also supports designers and decision makers in incorporating effective proliferation resistance measures throughout the NES life cycle, thereby strengthening non-proliferation as an integral component of sustainable nuclear energy development.
