Star Trek: Open a Channel: A Woman's Trek

Nana Visitor on how Star Trek led the way for women, and where it stayed stuck in its own era. When Nichelle Nichols was cast as Lt. Uhura in 1966, she carried women and people of colour into an imagined future, in a miniskirt, because it was still the 1960s. In her first book, the Deep Space Nine star best known as Major Kira Nerys looks at how every Star Trek series since has reflected the values of its time while picturing a future of equals. She talks to more than a dozen women who starred in the franchise, including Kate Mulgrew, Terry Farrell, Denise Crosby, Tawny Newsome and Sonequa Martin-Green, and to the soldiers, scientists and astronauts the show inspired. For the book she visited ESA headquarters and interviewed astronaut Samantha Cristoforetti while she was in orbit on the International Space Station. It is a book about Star Trek, and about how the stories we tell, and the place of women in them, have changed over sixty years. A brilliant gift for any Trek fan, and for anyone interested in women on both sides of the camera.Written by Deep Space Nine star Nana VisitorInterviews with more than a dozen women from Star TrekReal-world stories, including an interview from the International Space StationLook out for more from the final frontier, including Star Trek: Designing the Final Frontier.
