“DRESSED IN DALARNA” IS AN EXHIBIT about folk costumes and how they have developed and changed over time. Different factors, such as changes in society, economy, fashion, and imported materials have all had an affect on folk costumes from this area. The exhibit also shows traditional folk costume variations for all aspects of life when they were used daily during earlier periods – from clothing worn during everyday chores and religious holidays to festive occasions. It also discusses the standardization that both traditional and newly created folk costumes went through when their usage became less common. Different textile production techniques and materials that have been introduced into folk costumes are shown in displays here and hopefully give inspiration for how folk costumes can be used today.

A child who will be named Johannes is born. An old man named Johannes dies. Between these two points, Jon Fosse gives us the details of an entire life, starkly compressed. Beginning with Johannes’s father’s thoughts as his wife goes into labour, and ending with Johannes's own thoughts as he embarks upon a day in his life when everything is exactly the same, yet totally different, Morning and Evening is a novel concerning the beautiful dream that our lives have meaning.

In her old house by the fjord, Signe lies on a bench and sees a vision of herself as she was more than twenty years earlier: standing by the window waiting for her husband Asle, on that terrible late November day when he took his rowboat out onto the water and never returned. Her memories widen out to include their whole life together, and beyond: the bonds of family and the battles with implacable nature stretching back over five generations, to Asle's great-great-grandmother Aliss. In Jon Fosse's vivid, hallucinatory prose, all these moments in time inhabit the same space, and the ghosts of the past collide with those who still live on. Aliss at the Fire, is a visionary masterpiece, a haunting exploration of love and loss that ranks among the greatest meditations on marriage and human fate.

A comprehensive introduction to logic’s central concepts. This book provides a concise but detailed account of modern logic's three cornerstones: the completeness of first-order logic, Gödel's Incompleteness Theorems, and Turing's analysis of computability. In addition to the central text, an appendix explains the required technical terminology and facts. The main ideas behind the three cornerstones are explained in a simple, easy-to-grasp manner, and it is possible to select among the chapters and sections so that the reader becomes familiar with these ideas, even if some technicalities are skipped or postponed. A wealth of exercises accompany a wide selection of materials, including the histories and philosophical implications of the three main premises, making it useful as a textbook for undergraduate or graduate courses focusing on any of the three main themes. The material is rigorous and detailed but keeps the main ideas in sight, and there are numerous excursions into more advanced material for curious readers to explore.

How do you know what might have happened, had you done things differently? Causal machine learning gives you the insight you need to make predictions and control outcomes based on causal relationships instead of pure correlation, so you can make precise and timely interventions. In  Causal AI you will learn how to: Build causal reinforcement learning algorithms Implement causal inference with modern probabilistic machine tools such as PyTorch and Pyro Compare and contrast statistical and econometric methods for causal inference Set up algorithms for attribution, credit assignment, and explanation Convert domain expertise into explainable causal models Causal AI is a practical introduction to building AI models that can reason about causality. Author Robert Ness, a leading researcher in causal AI at Microsoft Research, brings his unique expertise to this cutting-edge guide. His clear, code-first approach explains essential details of causal machine learning that are hidden in academic papers. Everything you learn can be easily and effectively applied to industry challenges, from building explainable causal models to predicting counterfactual outcomes.   About the technology:   Causal machine learning is a major milestone in machine learning, allowing AI models to make accurate predictions based on causes rather than just correlations. Causal techniques help you make models that are more robust, explainable, and fair, and have a wide range of applications, from improving recommendation engines to perfecting self-driving cars.

Jan Waldenström (1906-1996) was the leading Swedish internist of the twentieth century. The first chapter of the book presents his remarkable family including five generations of physicians. Born in Stockholm, we follow JW to medical school at Uppsala University during 1924–33. In 1934–5, he spent a year in the laboratory of Nobel Laureate Hans Fischer in Munich. In 1937, he defended a landmark thesis on acute intermittent porphyria. As “Docent” (assistant professor) in Uppsala, he discovered two new diseases in 1943, one of which was macroglobulinemia. In 1944–5, he spent 7 months in the US commissioned by the Swedish Health Board. This started friendships and interactions with leading colleagues and scientists. With time, JW fostered a worldwide network of contacts and became a most influential international authority. But this was just the beginning. The book follows Waldenström's remarkable career including his description of chronic active hepatitis as a new disease and the carcinoid syndrome. Among his many other significant achievements were the introduction of nuclear medicine in Sweden and his pioneering the concept of poly- and monoclonal gammopathies. His legacy is emphasized by Waldenström lectures, Waldenström Prizes, and by the International Waldenström’s Macroglobulinemia Foundation, IWMF, and the Bing Center for Waldenström’s macroglobulinemia at the Dana Farber Institute of Cancer Institute of the Harvard University in Boston. And  now, not least, by this comprehensive biography.

'A remarkable debut novel' Sunday Times'The best historical thriller I've read in twenty years' A.J. Finn'A thrilling, unnerving, clever and beautiful story. Reading it is like giving a little gift to oneself' Fredrik BackmanThe year is 1793, Stockholm. King Gustav of Sweden has been assassinated, years of foreign wars have emptied the treasuries, and the realm is governed by a self-interested elite, leaving its citizens to suffer. On the streets, malcontent and paranoia abound.A body is found in the city's swamp by a watchman, Mickel Cardell, and the case is handed over to investigator Cecil Winge, who is dying of consumption. Together, Winge and Cardell become embroiled in a brutal world of guttersnipes and thieves, mercenaries and madams, and one death will expose a city rotten with corruption beneath its powdered and painted veneer. The Wolf and the Watchman depicts the capacity for cruelty in the name of survival or greed - but also the capacity for love, friendship, and the desire for a better world.

An examination of the traditional wisdom of astrology combined in the light of Jungian psycholgy shows the horoscope to be an accurate picture of the psychic structure and a key to selfknowledge and personal growth.Beginning with a lucid analysis of Jung's terminology, including the archetypes, the collective unconscious, and the theory of synchronicity, Dr. HamakerZondag explores in depth the striking correspondences between Jung's theory and psychological types and the tradtional elements. She shows how the elements of astrology relate to the psychological types, and discusses the zodiac as a path of life.Psychological Astrology is a must for students since the author elucidates the houses and their structure and provides an enlightening discussion of the planets as they symbolize basic human drives. First published as AstroPsychology, this edition has been revised and updated.

Education, mental health and the arts all share a concern for human beings and for how they live their lives. Living one’s life, and living it well, has always been a challenge – life never simply happens. But what the particular challenges are, differs from time to time, from location to location, and even from individual to individual. In both education and mental health there is a strong pressure to think of being human as a technical problem that in some way can be ‘fixed’ by powerful, research-based interventions. Also arts are quickly turned into an instrument for fixing problems. While such fixing may be possible, and may appear to be quite successful from one perspective, it clearly runs the risk of turning students and clients into objects – things to be acted upon, rather than human beings to encounter and act with. This book stages conversations between art, education, and mental health around the question of what it means to be human today. Moving beyond the suggestion that this requires ‘strong’ educational or therapeutic interventions or can be resolved by means of individual expression, the chapters explore new possibilities for 'the arrival of I’.

The Mother, the Politician, and the Guerrilla intervenes in discussions on decolonialism and feminism by introducing the example of the Kurdish Women's Freedom Movement. Üstündağ shows how the practices and the concepts of the movement contribute to debates on how the past, present, and future can be critically rethought in revolutionary ways.In the movement's images, figures, voices, bodies, and their reverberations Üstündağ elaborates a new political imagination that has emerged in Kurdistan through women's acts and speech. This political imagination unfolds between flesh, body, voice, language. It is the result of Kurdish women's desire to find new ways of being and becoming, between the necessary and the possible.Focusing on the figures of the mother, the woman politician and woman guerilla, Üstündağ argues that the Kurdish Women's Freedom Movement changes what politics consists of, including its matter, relationality, temporality, and spatiality. Although anchored in the specific Kurdish experiences, the book puts the movement into conversation with feminist political theory, psychoanalysis, Black Studies, Queer Studies, and Decolonial Studies. In solidarity with the Kurdish Movement's tradition of resistance to History with a capital H that Kurds have built through reiterated performance, the book seeks to establish what new entanglements with wide-ranging thought the movement offers as a provocation for contemporary politics.

Reframing Swedish–American relations by focusing on contacts, crossings, and convergences beyond migration Studies of Swedish American history and identity have largely been confined to separate disciplines, such as history, literature, or politics. In Swedish–American Borderlands, this collection edited by Dag Blanck and Adam HjorthÉn seeks to reconceptualize and redefine the field of Swedish–American relations by reviewing more complex cultural, social, and economic exchanges and interactions that take a broader approach to the international relationship-ultimately offering an alternative way of studying the history of transatlantic relations. Swedish–American Borderlands studies connections and contacts between Sweden and the United States from the seventeenth century to today, exploring how movements of people have informed the circulation of knowledge and ideas between the two countries. The volume brings together scholars from a wide range of disciplines within the humanities and social sciences to investigate multiple transcultural exchanges between Sweden and the United States. Rather than concentrating on one-way processes or specific national contexts, Swedish–American Borderlands adopts the concept of borderlands to examine contacts, crossings, and convergences between the nations, featuring specific case studies of topics like jazz, architecture, design, genealogy, and more.By placing interactions, entanglements, and cross-border relations at the center of the analysis, Swedish–American Borderlands seeks to bridge disciplinary divides, joining a diverse set of scholars and scholarship in writing an innovative history of Swedish–American relations to produce new understandings of what we perceive as Swedish, American, and Swedish American. Contributors: Philip J. This open access book examines the roles of municipal chief executive officers in Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden. Whilst it has long been recognised that local authorities in these countries are often more autonomous than most other local authorities around the world, we still lack an integrated overview of leadership in Nordic local government, and the development of its top administrative management. This book ameliorates this lack of knowledge by providing a thorough, extensive and updated assessment of the role of municipal chief executive officers in the five Nordic states, as well as their interactions and relations with internal and external actors. Comparative in nature, it will appeal to all those interested in local and urban governance, public administration, public management, and leadership studies.

The author of the “thrilling, unnerving, clever, and beautiful” (Fredrik Backman) Wolf and the Watchman series presents a new historical series that takes us to medieval Sweden to unravel one of the country’s most infamous murder mysteries.1434: The Kalmar Union is cracking at its seams as a rebellion, led by miner Engelbrekt Engelbrektsson, erupts in the north. One is lost in longing, another forges plans for the throne and crown, and one might finally have the opportunity to rise from her brother’s shadow. As the fifteenth-generation grandson of Måns Bengtsson, Niklas Natt och Dag expertly delves into his own family history to reveal a chilling and compulsively readable mystery.

How a sextant works and how to get the most out of it.The sextant is the treasured navigational device of generations of seamen and airmen. It enables position to be determined with good accuracy for ocean navigation, and it was the combination of sextant and chronometer that allowed safe navigation of the oceans for generations of seafarers.Despite the accuracy and ease of use of electronic navigation systems, every navigator should be able to use a sextant. It could even save your life in the event of electronics failure. This book describes how a sextant works, provides practical tips and advice on using it, explains how to read as well as take sights, how to make adjustments and correct errors, and finally advises on how to handle and care for the instrument.Originally written by the late Captain O M Watts, this new edition has been entirely rewritten by Dag Pike, a seaman and navigator of great experience. He is perhaps best known as the navigator of Virgin Atlantic Challenger on its successful record attempt.'An enormously useful guide' - Fishing Boat World

This volume contains 16 papers on problems about meaning and interpretation. The themes treated range from general philosophical issues concerning meaning and interpretation to more specific questions about interpretation of historical events, Biblical texts and statutory law. Three themes that receive much attention in several papers are: the objectivity and normativity of meaning, the reading and interpretation of fiction, and the role and limitations of the principle of compositionality in linguistic understanding. All the papers were presented at a conference held in Stockholm in 1998 with scholars from philosophy, linguistics, aesthetic disciplines, history, jurisprudence and theology. There are four invited papers from outside Sweden, viz. by Donald Davidson, “Interpretation: Hard in Theory, Easy in Practice”, Jørgen Dines Johansen, “A Semiotic Perspective on the Interpretation of Literary Texts”, Paul Ricoeur, “Interpretation in History”, and Kendall L. Walton, “Empathy and Musical Tension”.

It is Christmas Eve, and 55-year-old Professor Pål Andersen is alone, drinking coffee and cognac in his living room. Lost in thought, he looks out of the window and sees a man strangle a woman in the apartment across the street. Professor Andersen fails to report the crime. The days pass, and he becomes paralysed by indecision. Desperate for respite, the professor sets off to a local sushi bar, only to find himself face to face with the murderer.Professor Andersen's Night is an unsettling yet highly entertaining novel of apathy, rebellion and morality. In flinty prose, Solstad presents an uncomfortable question: would we, like his cerebral protagonist, do nothing?
