The entry point into one of the most notoriously 'difficult' but rewarding fantasy series of the past fifty years, Steven Erikson's monumental The Malazan Book of the Fallen, Gardens of the Moon is a breathtaking achievement . . . The vast, sprawling Malazan Empire simmers with discontent. It has been bled dry by seemingly interminable warfare, bitter infighting and bloody confrontations with the formidable Anomander Rake, Lord of Moon's Spawn, and his Tiste Andii. And now even the imperial legions, long inured to the bloodshed, yearn for some respite. For Sergeant Whiskeyjack and his squad of Bridgeburners - and for Tattersail, the Second Legion’s only surviving sorceress - the aftermath of the siege of Pale should have been a time to heal the wounded and mourn the dead. But the ancient citadel of Darujhistan, last of the Free Cities of Genabackis, still holds out against the Empire - and Empress Laseen’s ambition knows no bounds. However, the Empire is not alone in this great game - sinister forces are gathering as the gods themselves prepare to play their hand . . .‘Tolkien might have made the most authentic feeling fantasy or sci-fi world I have encountered, but Erikson is the only writer who can compare . . . literally astounding’ GUARDIAN 'If you ask any hardcore fantasy fan for a 'final boss' recommendation, they'll probably point you toward Steven Erikson's Malazan Book of the Fallen. It is a massive, towering beast of a series that doesn't care if you're confused. Erikson doesn't do hand-holding; he just drops you into a world with 300,000 years of history and expects you to catch up . . . it is a tough, dense read, but if you can stick it out, the emotional payoff is huge.' What do our gardens say about us?Monty Don has spent many years travelling the world, from America to Japan, from Italy and the Adriatic to Spain and the Mediterranean, getting under the skin of a country through its gardens and gardening traditions. In British Gardens, he finally brings his focus to home, journeying from the northern tip of Scotland to the Cornish coast, seeking to understand what our gardens tell us about ourselves as a nation.Encompassing historical gardens and public parks, mountains and seascapes, urban gardens and rural nurseries, glasshouses and community plots, each encounter is another link in a larger story of British identity: marks of ingenuity, eccentricity, and adaptation to changing environments. The internationally renowned garden designer Ulf Nordfjell has created many stunning and celebrated gardens and parks. He has won numerous awards (including RHS Chelsea Gold Medals) for his gardens, which combine the sweep and presence of masterful place-making with a keen plantsman's eye for the detail that can be enjoyed through variety, combination and interest in colour, texture and movement. The ten new projects presented in this book - from an island garden in coastal Sweden to a Stockholm town garden to a villa in the South of France - are more than just a selection of beautiful gardens, however. They also provide the opportunity to consider how parks and gardens are affected by a changing climate as well as the changing seasons. The book takes the form of an incomparable garden journey from northern Sweden to the Mediterranean, a journey that passes through many latitudes and climate zones. The informative text gives an insight into the ideas behind the design of estates, urban parks and domestic gardens. But Nordfjell also grapples with the great question of our time: the changes in the climate that will affect - that are already affecting - our parks and gardens in the short and long term.

Since 1997 Luciano Giubbilei has been creating serenely beautiful gardens in locations on three continents. Giubbilei is known for the understated elegance of his designs, but is constantly evolving his style and approach, both in response to individual clients and as his ideas develop. His work draws on his Italian heritage, especially the Renaissance gardens of the Villa Gamberaia in Tuscany, and a distinctively classical combination of restraint and opulent materials. This book – now published in paperback for the first time – explores 12 significant gardens from Giubbilei's portfolio, including the garden that won him a gold medal at the world-famous Royal Horticultural Society's Chelsea Flower Show in 2009. The locations vary from private residences in London and Barcelona to corporate headquarters in Geneva and a holiday home in Morocco. Each project is fully documented, from the preparation of mood boards and initial sketches to final planting and finishing. As Tom Stuart-Smith notes in his foreword, Giubbilei's gardens are characterised by their 'quiet aura of calm and poise' and their 'restful confidence': 'The gardens are like the man, impeccably turned out, suave and urbane in a gentle way, quietly assertive but never bossy. Sophisticated and thoroughly Italian. His style provides a form of instant theatre, where the designer forges places, conjures atmosphere and creates spaces out of nothing. This is great art.' Separate sections on the design process, site development, nursery production and the sourcing of plants, as well as on the artists and craftsmen with whom Giubbilei collaborates, offer a fascinating insight into his working methods and sources of inspiration. Accessibly written by a leading garden professional and fully illustrated with planting plans, behind-the-scenes images and atmospheric photographs by Steven Wooster, this beautiful book is the definitive work on the gardens of an acclaimed designer. AUTHOR: Andrew Wilson is a garden designer, lecturer and writer. He is a founding director of the London College of Garden Design, a director of the McWilliam Studio, a former show gardens judge for the Royal Horticultural Society, and a Fellow and past chairman of the Society of Garden Designers. Cottage gardens never go out of style, and the rise of homesteading and “cottagecore” is leading to a resurgence of this charming and practical style.Beloved for their informality, cottage gardens champion organic and unstructured spaces overflowing with textures and colors while welcoming self-sown plants and bulbs popping up and spreading on their own. Appearing casual, everything is done with great intent. From humble origins in medieval England and Colonial America, this style arose as a practical approach—ornamentals and edibles intermingling and supporting each other—before being elevated by great garden designers Gertrude Jekyll, William Robinson, Vita Sackville-West, Margery Fish, and Rosemary Verey. Today, concerns about food traceability, reducing waste and chemical use, and supporting pollinators and wildlife have rekindled interest in cottage gardening.Taking a 360-degree view, this book covers plant combinations, paths and walls, water features and extending the season, as well as promoting traditional, organic practices such as composting, rain harvesting, and succession planting.

Few people have difficulty conjuring images of modern Scandinavian design, whose influence over the past century has reached around the world. More difficult for many is imagining the quiet landscapes of the Nordic countries, which range from the flatlands of Denmark to the dramatic mountains and fjords of Norway. These majestic environments, combined with long summer days and light-poor winters, raking light and dense birch forests, have given rise to exceptionally refined examples of garden and landscape design. This survey presents the best gardens to have been produced in the region over the past ten years. Organized by themes that encapsulate the special ambience and lifestyle of the Scandinavian countries – Simplicity, Silence, Fragility, Nakedness, Attunement, Boldness, Openness and Care – each garden is presented through images and texts explaining its unique aspects and describing its particularly Scandinavian characteristics. The timelessness of Nordic design has proven itself around the world for many decades. Now it is time for the quality of its gardens and landscapes to come into the light. With 291 illustrations in colour

Newly updated edition of the first book in French and English devoted to Nicole de Vésian and her work After a career as a designer working for the great design houses, especially Hermès, Nicole de Vésian (1916-1996) moved to Provence and created her first garden. Her green and grey tapestry-gardens soon inspired gardeners and landscapers around the world. Today, few gardens have been imitated as readily as those of Nicole de Vésian, because, writes Louisa Jones, ‘she has a feeling for space like musicians have a feeling for music.’ Her finest work was La Louve, her own garden in Bonnieux, a hilltop village in the Luberon area of Provence. On the narrow terraces around her Bonnieux home, Nicole de Vésian created her own very personal garden in a minimal but far from austere style, composed mainly of heath-land plants (varieties of thyme, lavender, rosemary, rockrose and box tree), in which she pruned all her plants to cushion shapes of varying, yet superbly proportioned sizes. Nicole de Vésian advises us to ‘learn to listen to the soil.’ Her plant sculptures are always somehow a reference to the wild hills of the surrounding countryside, reflecting an age-old Mediterranean landscape mindset, with a distinctly modern twist. The work is also a tribute to Nicole de Vésian and her life. Her close friend, Louisa Jones, shares her own thoughts on the work of this atypical creator, accompanied by accounts from her friends and pupils: Christian Lacroix, the nursery owner Jean-Marie Rey, the landscape artists Arnaud Maurières, Éric Ossart and Marc Nucera, as well as the garden historians Roy Strong and John Brookes.
