First published in 1900, this systematic analysis of slavery in primitive societies from an ethnographical and economic viewpoint by Dutch scholar Herman Nieboer (1873-1920) brought him international fame. The first part defines what he means by slavery, and then examines how slavery has been practised at different periods and in all parts of the world. In the second part, Nieboer analyses this mass of information from ethnographical literature to derive an underlying theory of slavery, and the economic conditions necessary for it to function. Discussing the different types of early societies - hunters, nomads and agriculturists - Nieboer shows how the presence or absence of slavery can be closely linked to economic conditions. The book was a key work in the study of early slavery, particularly as Nieboer concentrates on primitive cultures rather than on the ancient and classical world most studied previously, and covers a worldwide geographical area.

An NYRB Classics OriginalIt is a sunny summer Sunday in a remote Swiss village, and a christening is being celebrated at a lovely old farmhouse. One of the guests notes an anomaly in the fabric of the venerable edifice: a blackened post that has been carefully built into a trim new window frame. Thereby hangs a tale, one that, as the wise old grandfather who has lived all his life in the house proceeds to tell it, takes one chilling turn after another, while his audience listens in appalled silence. Featuring a cruelly overbearing lord of the manor and the oppressed villagers who must render him service, an irreverent young woman who will stop at nothing, a mysterious stranger with a red beard and a green hat, and, last but not least, the black spider, the tale is as riveting and appalling today as when Jeremias Gotthelf set it down more than a hundred years ago. The Black Spider can be seen as a parable of evil in the heart or of evil at large in society (Thomas Mann saw it as foretelling the advent of Nazism), or as a vision, anticipating H. P. Lovecraft, of cosmic horror. There’s no question, in any case, that it is unforgettably creepy.

Employment law has increasingly struggled to adapt to complex modern work arrangements, from agency work to corporate groups. This book suggests that the reason for this failure can be found in our concept of the employer, which has become riddled with internal contradictions in its search for a unitary employer, the counterparty to a bilateral contract, through a series of multi-functional tests focussed on the exercise of a range of employer functions. As a result of this tension, full employment law coverage is restricted to a narrow scenario where a single legal entity exercises all employer functions - a paradigm far from the reality of modern labour markets characterized by a fragmentation of work, from the rise of employment agencies and service companies to corporate groups and Private Equity investors. These problems can only be addressed by a careful reconceptualization and the development of a functional concept of the employer. The book draws on existing models in English, German, and European law to develop a definition of the employer as the entity, or combination of entities, exercising functions regulated in a particular domain of employment law. Each of the two strands of the current concept is addressed in turn to demonstrate how a more openly multi-functional approach can successfully overcome the rigidities of the current notion without abandoning a coherent underlying framework. It fills a crucial gap in employment law and corporate law with its analysis of the defects in our current understanding of the employer, and in developing a new functional concept designed to overcome the problems identified.

The contract of employment is the central legal institution of modern English employment law. It provides the foundation upon which most statutory employment rights are constructed; it provides a conduit for the implementation of norms negotiated in collective bargaining; and it continues to provide a contractual structure for the terms and conditions of employment for a significant proportion of the working population. The Contract of Employment provides the most ambitious and comprehensive treatise on the theoretical and doctrinal aspects of the English contract of employment in the common law world. Under the general editorship of Professor Mark Freedland, the text has been produced by a team of world leading experts in employment law. Part I examines the theoretical context to the contract of employment, studying its structure and development from a wide variety of theoretical and comparative perspectives. Part II provides an exposition and analysis of the doctrinal aspects of the contract of employment. The coverage of The Contract of Employment is unrivalled in its depth, detail and sophistication. The legal analysis is always informed by a keen sense of the modern labour market context of the contract of employment, and it is sensitive to contemporary challenges such as precariousness, the interaction with migration law, the role of legislation in the contract of employment, and the decline of collective bargaining. It will be the principal reference point for the practitioners, judges, and academics concerned with the contract of employment as a legal category, both nationally and internationally.

The Internal Market Ideal honours the pathbreaking work of Professor Stephen Weatherill, Jacques Delors Professor of European Law at the University of Oxford (1998-2021). For more than three decades, Professor Weatherill has been the dominant figure in internal market debates, shaping the European Union's Internal Market both at Oxford and internationally. Looming large in fields as disparate as consumer protection and sports law, his voice has guided how relevant laws and regulations are understood and how their varying virtues and pitfalls are perceived. A reference to his seminal work The Internal Market as a Legal Concept (OUP, 2016), the present volume is not simply a celebration of Weatherill's scholarship, but also an examination of the legal issues surrounding the semi-integrated market of the European Union. Across nineteen essays, the collection presents a vision of the European Union not yet achieved; that is, a Union which benefits from economic growth and pursues non-economic objectives, whilst carefully balancing respect for Member States' autonomy and the European Union's self-sufficiency.The Internal Market Ideal is an invaluable resource for students, researchers, practitioners, and policy makers in the field of European Law.

This books aim is to introduce the English reader to the major Swiss novelist.

This issue of Interventional Cardiology Clinics, edited by Allen Jeremias, is devoted to Intravascular Physiology. Dr. Jeremias assembled a group of expert contributors to review the following topics: Evolution of Coronary Physiology - Basic Concepts of FFR and CFR; Concept of "Functional PCI" - The Rational for Physiologic Lesion Assessment for PCI Guidance; Limitations and Pitfalls of FFR and Adenosine-Induced Hyperemia; Evidence for the Use of FFR to Guide Clinical Decision-Making - The Landmark FFR Clinical Trials; Evaluation of Microvascular Disease and Clinical Outcomes; Hyperemic vs. Resting Indices for the Assessment of CAD; FFR for the Evaluation of Tandem and Bifurcations Lesions, Left Main, and Acute Coronary Syndromes; and CT-FFR: Basic Concept and Clinical Implementation.

In this issue of Interventional Cardiology Clinics, guest editor Dr. Allen Jeremias brings his considerable expertise to the topic of Intracoronary Physiology and Its Use in Interventional Cardiology. Assessment of intra-coronary physiology can guide percutaneous coronary intervention and is often used for angiographically borderline stenoses. There is now increasing evidence to suggest that more routine use can improve clinical outcomes. In this issue, top experts bring you fully up to date in this key area of interventional cardiology.

Dr Jeremias argues that the historical truth can be detected beneath the traditions preserved in the New Testament about the Last Supper. It was a climax of a series of Messianic meals, this time a passover meal. Jesus himself abstained, in anticipation of the new Exodus, to be initiated by the breaking of his body and the outpouring of his blood, but at it the disciples received a share in the atoning power of their Lord's sufferings.

'This attractively produced volume is a fully documented work of scholarship from a scholar of international repute and has for some years now provided an important new work of reference on everything pertaining to the religious, social and economic background of the Holy City in the time of Christ.' (New Blackfriars)'The whole work is a superb quarry of information ... everyone should be richly instructed by its study.' (Times Literary Supplement)`Professor Jeremias brings a deep love for the place to his erudition, particularly in the realm of Jewish sources, and the result is a book of outstanding merit' (Church of England Newspaper)Until his death in 1979, Joachim Jeremias was Emeritus Professor of New Testament in the University of Gottingen.

The almost exclusively Jewish scope of the ministry of Jesus has often been explained as a deliberate concentration with a view to ultimate expansion. To this Dr Jeremias adds the further explanation that Jesus' own thought and policy were guided by a pattern of Old Testament expectation which enabled him to look forward confidently to the pilgrimage of the Gentiles to the Mount of God at the final consumation, and accordingly to preach a bold universalism, while at the same time remaining content during his ministry to limit his actual appeal to the Jews. Dr Jeremias argues his case as always with a wealth of very instructive erudition' (C. F. D. Moule in JTS). Joachim Jeremias, who died in 1979, was Professor Emeritus of New Testament in the University of Gottingen.

This classic work of twentieth-century German biblical scholarship has become a classic in the field of New Testament studies.

This volume, which was formerly published as one of the series Studies in Biblical Theology, is now reissued independently. It contains three essays which 'show the combination of massive learning with fresh and limpid piety that distinguishes all Jeremias's work' (Theology): 'Abba.', 'Daily Prayer in the Life of Jesus and the Primitive Church' and 'The Lord's Prayer in the Light of Recent Research'.

Joachim Jeremias' The Parables of Jesus is a classic of twentieth-century New Testament scholarship. However, to appreciate its original form to the full calls for a knowledge of Greek, and patience to work through much technical and linguistic material. Aware of this, before he died the author worked on a shorter and simplified version which was subsequently also translated into English.'This is an excellent idea, because a book which became for many students a gateway into a new understanding of the parables is now available, in its main substance, to a much wider group of readers'(The Expository Times).Long unavailable, it is now reissued for a new generation of readers who will perhaps find it even more useful than did their predecessors.Joachim Jeremias was Professor of New Testament in the University of Gottingen and died in 1979.

In this text, Joachim Jeremias explores the variety of ways of interpreting the parables of Jesus, including their translation; the way different audiences altered the parables Jesus told; and the role of the New Testament writers in shaping their telling of the parables. He also provides a thematic discussion of the theological messages contained within the parables.

The present book has developed out of a short pamphlet entitled Hat die alteste Christenheit die Kindertaufe geubt? (Did the primitive Church practise infant baptism?). It does not attempt to do more than lay before the reader the historical material relating to the history of infant baptism in the first four centuries in as concrete and sober a manner as possible. This material has increased in an unexpected manner in the last decades. In this context I refer principally to the enrichment of our knowledge about proselyte baptism, the studies made of early Christian epitaphs, the ascription of the so-called Egyptian Church Order to Hippolytus, and the ascription to Asterius of some homilies on the Psalms which previously had wrongly been attributed to Chrysostom. Although much remains obscure, especially in the matter of its first beginnings, it may still be said that the early history of infant baptism is much more clearly defined today than in any previous age.
