‘Riveting. This highly readable and entertaining book ... finally sets the record straight on the history of the Koh-i-Noor’ Tarquin Hall, Sunday Times‘Dynamic, original and supremely readable’ Maya Jasanoff, GuardianThe first comprehensive and authoritative history of the Koh-i-Noor, arguably the most celebrated and mythologised jewel in the world. On 29 March 1849, the ten-year-old maharaja of the Punjab was ushered into the magnificent Mirrored Hall at the centre of the great fort in Lahore. There, in a public ceremony, the frightened but dignified child handed over great swathes of the richest country in India in a formal Act of Submission to a private corporation, the East India Company. He was also compelled to hand over to the British monarch, Queen Victoria, perhaps the single most valuable object on the subcontinent: the celebrated Koh-i-Noor diamond. The Mountain of Light. The history of the Koh-i-Noor may have been one woven together from gossip of Delhi bazaars, but it was to become the accepted version. Only now is it finally challenged, freeing the diamond from the fog of mythology that has clung to it for so long. The resulting history is one of greed, murder, torture, colonialism and appropriation told through an impressive slice of south and central Asian history. It ends with the jewel in its current controversial setting: in the crown of Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother, which was deemed too contentious to be used by Camilla, the Queen Consort, in King Charles’s coronation.Masterly, powerful and erudite, this is history at its most compelling and invigorating.

A courtesan had told Nadir Shah that the priceless diamond hidden in Mohammed Shah's turban. Citing an ancient tradition, the victor demanded an exchange of headgear. At last the diamond was his. Or was it? Hastily he undud the folds... Wonderstruck at the gem's size, brilliance and beauty, he exclaimed, 'Koh-i-noor'! 1739: the gem now had a name. One fabulous diamond whose value could feed the entire world for two-and-a-half days. Four race: Indian, Afghan, Persian and English, whose destinies were inextrcably involved with this gem. A Persian oilman's son who went on to virtually rule Golconda and its vast diamond mines. A Mughal prince, hated by history, who was sinned against as much as sinning. Only an Indian or Persian couild tell this great story with all its nuances.

The Conspiracy of Words From Surrender to GiftMarch 29 1849 The Document of Truth In Article 3 of the Treaty of Lahore the text explicitly stated— The gem called the KohiNoor shall be surrendered by the Maharajah of Lahore to the Queen of England The word Gift did not exist in this document It was a mandatory condition of war imposed on a 10yearold childJuly 3 1850 The Date of Pretense When the diamond was first presented to the Queen in London East India Company records logged it as a Prize of War The drama of a gift had not yet begun because Dalhousie was still navigating the legalities of a forced seizure18511852 Guilt and the Cutting When the London public began criticizing the diamond as looted property the British decided to rewrite history They cut the diamond physically destroying its ancient Sikh identity so it could be rebranded as a new British jewelJuly 1854 The Day History Was Rewritten This is the date the British staged their grandest lie Duleep Singh was brought to Buckingham Palace The same diamond stolen from him five years prior was placed in his hands As he handed it back to the Queen British officials began recording in official letters The Maharajah has voluntarily gifted this to the Queen

The International Legal ProclamationThe retention of the KohiNoor by the British Crown is not a matter of historical gift or treaty but a continuous act of colonial plunder and international art theft Executed through the Treaty of Lahore 1849—a document void ab initio due to the coercion of a minor sovereign—this transfer lacks any legal validity under the Nemo Dat principle and the Vienna Convention on the Law of Treaties As the stone originates from the Golconda mines India holds the absolute Sovereign Copyright and Geographical Indication To display this stolen artifact for commercial gain in 2026 is a violation of the UNIDROIT principles and a persistent crime against Indias cultural identity Justice demands its unconditional repatriation because time does not turn a heist into a heritage Author and book writer IQBAL KASAM SODHA from India kutch Gujarat Gandhidham KHARI ROHR

Koh-i-Noor The Prisoner of WarThe Fingerprints of a Child King and the Stolen DNA of a NationThe DNA of the SoilThe story of the KohiNoor does not begin in a kings treasury or on a battlefield it begins deep within the ancient womb of the Indian earth To understand this diamond one must first understand the soil that gave it birth This is not merely a geological occurrence It is as if the very essence of Bharat its spiritual energy and its elemental strength were compressed over billions of years into a single defiant spark of light When we speak of the KohiNoor we are speaking of a kidnapped fragment of our geography It is a piece of the motherland that was torn away yet it carries the silent vibrating frequency of the land it once called homeThe journey starts in the alluvial silts of the Krishna River specifically in the legendary Kollur mines Imagine the sweat and the hope of the ancient miners who waded through the mud their hands feeling for the pulse of the earth These people didnt just see stones they saw the blessings of the earth goddess The KohiNoor was born from this specific mineral DNA Science tells us that diamonds are formed under immense pressure and heat but the human heart knows that this particular stone absorbed the prayers the struggles and the vibrations of an entire civilization It is a mineral witness to the rise and fall of dynasties but its core remains tethered to the Indian sun

The Soul of the Fraud The Betrayal of the GuardianThe word Fraud is the death of honor The British didnt take the KohiNoor from an enemy on a battlefield they took it from a 10yearold child who was under their protection A guardians only duty is to protect the childs inheritance not to snatch it By forcing Dhalip Singh to sign the KohiNoor away to the Queen the British committed a legal sin they gifted the diamond to themselves You cannot be the protector and the thief at the same time This wasnt a treaty it was a masterstroke of deception that turned a sacred trust into a historical heist

SHORTLISTED FOR THE 2020 CUNDILL HISTORY PRIZE'Remarkable ... this brilliant book stands as an important monument to an almost forgotten world' William Dalrymple, Spectator A sweeping, magisterial new history of India from the middle ages to the arrival of the BritishThe Indian subcontinent might seem a self-contained world. Protected by vast mountains and seas, it has created its own religions, philosophies and social systems. And yet this ancient land experienced prolonged and intense interaction with the peoples and cultures of East and Southeast Asia, Europe, Africa and, especially, Central Asia and the Iranian plateau between the eleventh and eighteenth centuries. Richard M. Eaton's wonderful new book tells this extraordinary story with relish and originality. His major theme is the rise of 'Persianate' culture - a many-faceted transregional world informed by a canon of texts that circulated through ever-widening networks across much of Asia. Introduced to India in the eleventh century by dynasties based in eastern Afghanistan, this culture would become thoroughly indigenized by the time of the great Mughals in the sixteenth, seventeenth, and eighteenth centuries. This long-term process of cultural interaction and assimilation is reflected in India's language, literature, cuisine, attire, religion, styles of rulership and warfare, science, art, music, architecture, and more. The book brilliantly elaborates the complex encounter between India's Sanskrit culture - which continued to flourish and grow throughout this period - and Persian culture, which helped shape the Delhi Sultanate, the Mughal Empire and a host of regional states, and made India what it is today.

On the eve of a landmark general election, Ruchir Sharma offers an unrivalled portrait of how India and its democracy work, drawn from his two decades on the road chasing election campaigns across every major state, travelling the equivalent of a lap around the earth. Democracy on the Road takes readers on a rollicking ride with Ruchir and his merry band of fellow writers as they talk to farmers, shopkeepers and CEOs from Rajasthan to Tamil Nadu, and interview leaders from Narendra Modi to Rahul Gandhi. No book has traced the arc of modern India by taking readers so close to the action. Offering an intimate view inside the lives and minds of India's political giants and its people, Sharma explains how the complex forces of family, caste and community, economics and development, money and corruption, Bollywood and Godmen, have conspired to elect and topple Indian leaders since Indira Gandhi. The ultimately encouraging message of Ruchir's travels is that, while democracy is retreating in many parts of the world, it is thriving in India.

The colourful narrative history of Duleep Singh, the last Emperor of the Sikhs and protégé of Queen Victoria, and his bizarre attempts to regain his kingdom of the Punjab from the British Empire in the late 19th century. In July 1997 the Swiss Bankers’ Association, under international pressure to atone for wartime compliance with Hitler’s Germany, published a list of over 1,700 ‘dormant accounts’, untouched for over fifty years. The names were supposedly those of Jewish victims of the Holocaust, but among them was an Indian princess, ‘last heard of in 1942 living in Penn, Bucks’.Intrigued, Christy Campbell, a journalist on the Sunday Telegraph, started to search the records, and so uncovered the remarkable story of how Maharajah Duleep Singh, the last Emperor of the Sikhs, was made by the British – as a nine-year-old in 1849 – to sign away his kingdom of the Punjab and give Queen Victoria the Koh-i-Noor diamond (the most celebrated diamond in the world, and the jewel in Britain’s Crown).Duleep Singh, a virtual prisoner of Queen Victoria in England, began to dream of regaining his kingdom, and so embarked on a series of adventures (involving Russia and the ‘Great Game’ of Central Asia) before finally begging Victoria’s forgiveness. He had six children and died in 1893. Today the Sikhs still claim their inheritance, including the Koh-i-Noor and the now-divided Punjab.

Coward, scoundrel, lover and cheat, but there is no better man to go into the jungle with. Join Flashman in his adventures as he survives fearful ordeals and outlandish perils across the four corners of the world. With the mighty Sikh Khalsa, the finest army ever seen in Asia, poised to invade India and sweep Britannia’s ill-guarded empire into the sea, every able-bodied man was needed to defend the frontier – and one at least had his answer ready when the Call of Duty came: `I’ll swim in blood first!’Alas, though, for poor Flashman, there was no avoiding the terrors of secret service in the debauched and intrigue-ridden Court of the Punjab, the attentions of its beautiful nymphomaniac Maharani (not that he minded that, really), the horrors of its torture chambers or the baleful influence of the Mountain of Light.

CHOSEN AS A BOOK OF THE YEAR BY NEW STATESMAN AND BBC HISTORY MAGAZINE'In this searing book, Priya Satia demonstrates, yet again, that she is one of our most brilliant and original historians' Sunil Amrith, author of Unruly WatersFor generations, the history of the British empire was written by its victors. British historians' accounts of conquest guided the consolidation of imperial rule in India, the Middle East, Africa and the Caribbean. Their narratives of the development of imperial governance licensed the brutal suppression of colonial rebellion. Their reimagining of empire during the two world wars compromised the force of decolonization. In this brilliant work, Priya Satia shows how these historians not only interpreted the major political events of their time but also shaped the future that followed. History emerged as a mode of ethics in the modern period, endowing historians from John Stuart Mill to Winston Churchill with outsized policymaking power. Braided with this story is an account of alternative visions articulated by anticolonial thinkers such as William Blake, Mahatma Gandhi and E. P. Thompson. By the mid-twentieth century, their approaches had reshaped the discipline of history and the ethics that came with it.Time's Monster reveals the dramatic consequences of writing history today as much as in the past. Against the backdrop of enduring global inequalities and debates about reparations and the legacy of empire, Satia offers us a hugely important and urgent moral voice.
