I tre år har Eira arbetat åt Fru Grevinnan på godset. Först med att skura, tvätta och skrubba, sedan i köket och till sist som hushållerska. Hon har både en egen kammare och egna uppgifter. Kvinnorna ställs ofta inför rätta och många blir brända på bål. Men det finns även ljusglimtar - som att Eira upptäcker alfabetet och ivrigt försöker lära sig läsa. Som barn upptäcker Eira att hon kan se spöken och farmor Fredrika är den som ledsagar henne genom skuggorna. Men när farmor försvinner mitt framför ögonen på Eira vid en gammal, hednisk stencirkel och aldrig återvänder, bestämmer hon sig för att stänga dörren till det ockulta.

I tio år lyckas hon lägga det bakom sig och leva ett helt normalt liv, men ett par dagar före hennes tjugoårsdag börjar märkliga saker hända. Farmors gamla berlock dyker upp i posten utan avsändare och under firandet av hennes födelsedag inser Eira att hennes synska förmågor har återvänt.

Samtidigt ger sig en bok, som inte har öppnats sedan 1600-talets häxprocesser, plötsligt till känna. Legenden säger att den endast kan öppnas av en flicka av mörkret. Vem är hon? Making a case for methodological pluralism, the volume brings together an interdisciplinary team of historians and social scientists to address the aspects of civil war violence from a broad range of empirical and methodological perspectives. The book consists of three thematic sections. The first section covers contextual issues related to civil war violence, including the role of ideology and social dynamics. The second and third sections comprise empirical case studies that examine the dimensions of violence in six prominent European civil wars. The volume focuses on these particular conflicts because they are almost universally recognized as instances of civil war, and this enables the volume to maintain its analytical focus on the dynamics of violence.
