No poet has been more wilfully contradictory than John Donne, whose works forge unforgettable connections between extremes of passion and mental energy. From satire to tender elegy, from sacred devotion to lust, he conveys an astonishing range of emotions and poetic moods. Constant in his work, however, is an intensity of feeling and expression and complexity of argument that is as evident in religious meditations such as 'Good Friday 1613. Riding Westward' as it is in secular love poems such as 'The Sun Rising' or 'The Flea'. 'The intricacy and subtlety of his imagination are the length and depth of the furrow made by his passion,' wrote Yeats, pinpointing the unique genius of a poet who combined ardour and intellect in equal measure.

Organised by the International Energy Agency Greenhouse Gas Research and Development Programme, the International Conference on Technologies for Activities Implemented Jointly was held in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, May 26-29 (1997). The papers presented at the conference and published in these proceedings reflect the theme that Activities Implemented Jointly (AIJ) is a major tool to facilitate practical demonstration and development of greenhouse gas mitigation technologies. Published in a single volume under the title Greenhouse Gas Mitigation, the proceedings cover the following key areas: Key Note Presentations; International Initiatives; Enhancing Sinks and Stores; Maximising Joint Benefits; Improved Energy Technology; Asian Development Bank; Transport; Transmission and End Use. The concept of AIJ will facilitate international cooperation to reduce greenhouse gas concentrations and mitigate effects of climate change. In publishing these internationally-relevant conference proceedings, Greenhouse Gas Mitigation is likely to prove an invaluable reference tool for those engaged in research and application of initiatives to combat climate change.

Through analyzing recent change within six industries this book develops a resolutely interdisciplinary approach to studying globalization. By combining questions and methodologies from institutionalist economics and political science, it proposes a generalizable model for studying the politics of industry. It then tests a causal hypothesis.

This book provides the first dedicated introduction to the cultural writings and analyses of the radical West Indian thinker C.L.R. James. It lays out James' account of the way in which games, books, music and film become a part of the politics and history of popular struggles.

This rich and varied collection of essays makes a timely contribution to critical debates about the Female Gothic, a popular but contested area of literary studies. The contributors revisit key Gothic themes - gender, race, the body, monstrosity, metaphor, motherhood and nationality - to open up new critical directions.

Social researchers are increasingly aware of their obligations to the ''hard to reach'' communities they research. This book identifies the issues associated with researching these communities and offers both conceptual analyses and practical suggestions. The contributors are members of ARCSHS staff or drawn from the affected communities themselves.

Literature can have a disturbing effect on its readers. It unsettles our hold on everyday experience and makes us strangers and exiles. Anna Smith argues that this is the side of literature which attracts critic and psychoanalyst Julia Kristeva. Kristeva is drawn to states of extremity where language and the psyche are under duress, and in this book Smith examines the way the alchemical properties of words may transform these extremities into what Kristeva calls ''a fire of tongues, an exit from representation''.

The Sport Business Future examines the impact of powerful changes on the business of sport, including human-computer interfaces, gene therapy and artificial intelligence. It focuses upon probable future trends, including the athlete of the future, corporate sport citizenship and environmentally friendly ''green'' sport. The Sport Business Future , written by experts in the area, is a contentious but influential contribution to debates about sport, business and society in the future.

Sport represents a very intense and dynamic form of competition for individuals and for teams. Many of the themes of business, including leadership, teamworking, mentoring and coaching, strategy, innovation, etc. occur in sport in a very acute and focused way and will determine success or failure. With the use of compelling international examples the authors show how sport provides crucial leadership lessons for business.

Applying ideas drawn from contemporary critical theory this book historicizes psychoanalysis through a new, and significant, theorization of the Gothic. The central premise is that the nineteenth-century Gothic produced a radical critique of accounts of sublimity and Freudian psychoanalysis. This book makes a major contribution to an understanding of both the nineteenth century and the Gothic discourse which challenged the dominant ideas of that period. Writers explored include Mary Shelley, Edgar Allan Poe, Robert Louis Stevenson and Bram Stoker.

Sport has become big business. This book takes a global look at the business of sport focusing upon the structure of the sport industry, commercialisation of sport, sport marketing, franchising, television and other rights and the rise of the global super athletes and teams. This is positioned in a global political and economic context and in the framework of global uncertainties and scenarios.

Teaching the Gothic provides a clear and accessible account of how scholarship on the Gothic has influenced the way in which the Gothic is taught. The book examines a range of topics including Gothic criticism, Theory, Romantic Gothic, Victorian Gothic, Female Gothic, Gothic Sexualities, Gothic Film and Postgraduate developments.

The Return to Europe examines the ability of the central and south east European economies to withstand competitive pressures on entry to the EU. Trade with the EU largely involves the export of labour intensive goods in exchange for human capital intensive goods. The export structure of central European economies, which have attracted foreign direct investment, is improving. The Balkan economies remain dependent on exports of low-wage products. Will this create permanent divisions in Europe, with implications for European security?

This is the first full length exploration of the relationship between Gothic fiction and Modernism in fiction and film. The Gothic's fascination with images of the fragmented self is echoed in the Modernist concern with the psyche and the paranoia of the everyday. The contributors explore how the Gothic influences a range of writers including James Joyce, D.H. Lawrence, Virginia Woolf, May Sinclair, Elizabeth Bowen and Djuna Barnes.

The essays in Northcliffe's Legacy explore the popular press since 1896 - from Harmsworth's Daily Mail to Maxwell's Mirror . Topics include: the sorry tale of the Daily Herald ; early dealings with the BBC; the role of photojournalism; the contribution of Reuters; and the roots of financial journalism for a mass market. The history of the popular press has always been about more than big headlines and big profit margins, as this volume successfully demonstrates.

This innovative volume considers the relationship between the Gothic and theories of Post-Colonialism. Contributors explore how writers such as Salman Rushdie, Arunhati Roy and Ruth Prawer Jhabvala use the Gothic for postcolonial ends. Post-Colonial theory is applied to earlier Gothic narratives in order to re-examine the ostensibly colonialist writings of William Beckford, Charlotte Dacre, H. Rider Haggard and Bram Stoker. Contributors include Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak, David Punter and Neil Cornwell.

For over 500 years, from the middle Iron Age to the early Roman period, the 1st gravel terrace of the river Thames at Thornhill Farm appears to have been lived in and worked as a cattle ranch. Extensive excavations by Oxford Archaeology between 1986 and 1989 revealed large parts of the settlement, including paddocks, stock enclosures and droveways, all designed to control and manage the herds of animals. Evidence for domestic houses points to small family groups living at the site and tending to the livestock. The surrounding gravel terraces and floodplain would have formed open pastureland, upon which lay a number of other settlements, some of which were also operating specialist pastoral economies. The settlement at Thornhill Farm was constantly being developed and remodelled until the early 2nd century AD, when it was replaced by a series of trackways and some of the earliest hay meadows in Britain. What happened to the inhabitants of Thornhill Farm at this time is unknown, but it seems likely that the whole settlement was subsumed into a larger agricultural estate based at neighbouring Claydon Pike. The excavations at Thornhill Farm formed part of a co-ordinated archaeological response to the threat posed by gravel extraction during the creation of the Cotswold Water Park. This book presents the results of this phase of work, and discusses the significance of the site within the local and regional landscape.
