This book examines young people’s political engagement in the Anglo-American democracies. It is often alleged that young people are disengaged from politics on a number of levels. The commonly held view is that young people don’t vote, they do not trust politicians and have low levels of political interest. But is this true, where is it true and to what extent? Examining voter turnout, political trust, political interest, electoral and non-electoral forms of participation and Internet use, this book provides a comprehensive account of young people’s political engagement in the US, Britain, Canada and Australia. In doing so this book challenges the conventional wisdom on a number of fronts by showing young people’s political engagement to be much more complicated than many of the stereotypes suggest (in both good and bad ways). In this way, this book provides a report card on young people’s political engagement in the twenty-first century.Young People and Politics will be of interest to students and scholars of political science, comparative politics, public policy and sociology, particularly those with a focus on young people and politics, political participation and public opinion.

This book is the product of a collaboration between the data protection offices of the ICRC and UNHCR, alongside the Global Privacy Assembly, to reflect on a decade of progress in data protection in humanitarian contexts. Through practitioner perspectives, empirical research, and conceptual reflections, it examines how data protection underpins trust, accountability, and respect for affected populations, serving as a crucial enabler for ethical and effective humanitarian action in the digital age.The volume explores critical topics including digital transformation, operational complexities such as those linked to data breaches and data sharing, regulatory developments and international cooperation, legal frameworks and capacity-building. At the same time, it looks ahead, addressing the challenges and opportunities posed by emerging technologies and considering how the humanitarian sector may anticipate and prepare for them. This book is intended for policymakers, practitioners, authorities, academics, and other experts working in data protection, international organisations, and humanitarian action and adjacent fields. It offers a compass to help navigate complex operational and legal challenges in an increasingly digital and data-driven landscape. By positioning data protection as a foundational element of humanitarian action, the book provides timely, forward-looking insights into the sector’s preparedness for technological and regulatory change, with the aim of helping those most in need. The Open Access version of this book, available at www.taylorfrancis.com, has been made available under a Creative Commons Attribution-Non Commercial-No Derivatives (CC-BY-NC-ND) 4.0 International license.

The idea that a wave of distrust has swept over established democracies in recent years is commonly accepted. This book presents a contrary view. Drawing on various datasets, it reveals a disconnect between the popular commentary and the empirical reality. The Trust Gap suggests that the most extreme cases — such as the US and the UK — distort our thinking about trust. It looks beyond trust in government to examine trust in a range of institutions, including courts, universities and the media. In doing so, it suggests that while countries such as the US do face a crisis of trust, many established democracies demonstrate resilience rather than vulnerability. Using the framework of trust gaps, this book offers a stocktake on the state of trust in the 21st century, contributing a more nuanced and hopeful account than the headlines suggest.

This collection of essays, written by authors from diverse countries across four continents, explores the similarities and differences in technological expansionism. It examines how technology companies establish themselves in new markets and sectors and charts how technology projects increasingly capture public functions and infrastructures, raising critical concerns for democratic legitimacy and accountability. Starting from the changes in technology politics and governance brought by the pandemic, the book charts technology firms’ entry into critical public sectors such as healthcare, welfare, and education. The chapters demonstrate how market capture and other forms of expansion—often framed as emergency measures—are facilitated by diminished ethical, legal, and sector-specific oversight, as well as weakened transparency and public contestability. These ‘sector transgressions’ have enabled technology companies to consolidate power through accelerated privatisation, reduced public sector control over digital infrastructure, and increased dependency on private actors for policymaking and regulation. Through a series of case studies, the essays examine how this phenomenon emerges in different parts of the world, analysing its implications for data governance, public interest, and human rights. The book offers strategies for civil society and policymakers to address these challenges and ultimately argues for rethinking digital governance structures to safeguard the public interest.
