Das Buch beschäftigt sich mit dem Hauptmotiv von Kants Ästhetik. Während andere Interpretationen oft den Zusammenhang mit der Moralphilosophie in den Vordergrund stellen, antwortet Kant nach der These des Buchs mit seiner Theorie des Schönen auf ein Problem seiner Erkenntnistheorie. Die Studie wendet sich dem aus der Kritik der reinen Vernunft bekannten Problem der systematischen Einheit der Natur zu, das Kant erst in der Kritik der Urteilskraft anhand des Prinzips der Zweckmäßigkeit aufzulösen vermag. Herausgearbeitet werden die Behauptungen Kants, dass wir nur dann empirische Gesetze identifizieren und empirische Begriffe bilden können, wenn die Natur systematisch und damit für das menschliche Erkenntnisvermögen zweckmäßig verfasst ist. Da empirische Gesetze und Begriffe für uns unverzichtbar sind, sind wir nach Kant zu der Annahme einer Zweckmäßigkeit der Natur für unser Erkenntnisvermögen gezwungen. Die Bedeutung des Naturschönen liegt dabei in einem durch ein Lustgefühl vermittelten Nachweis, dass die Natur tatsächlich zweckmäßig für das menschliche Erkenntnisvermögen beschaffen ist.
