This edited volume provides an authoritative account of recent research into infant development, containing thirteen chapters written by leading British and North American infancy researchers. Editorial sections are used to provide an integrated whole and to point the reader to similarities and contrasts between arguments developed by different authors.Although the chapters are organised along conventional lines into sections on perceptual, cognitive and social development, the emphasis (appearing both within chapters and in the linking editorial passages within sections) is on links between perceptual, cognitive and social aspects of development. Thus, exciting new findings on infant perception are related to both old and new accounts of cognitive development, and links are drawn between these topics and the development of social interaction and language. There is a strong theoretical component in all sections of the book, with particular attention given to both traditional approaches such as Piagetian theory, and more recent approaches such as direct perception and dynamic systems theory. There is also a chapter devoted to interpreting infant development from a psychoanalytic perspective. A particular feature of this book is its aim to make recent findings and theoretical developments accessible to a student audience with little advanced knowledge of the area. Thus the book should appeal to a wide readership ranging from advanced undergraduate psychology students to established infancy researchers.

To make sense of the world, infants have to perceive it, and research into the development of sensory and perceptual abilities is one of the most exciting and important areas of infancy research. This book aims both to reflect current knowledge of perceptual development and to point to some of many questions that remain unanswered. Each of the major sections is prefaced by introductory comments, making the book equally useful for advanced undergraduates, postgraduates, researchers, and professionals who are interested in early perceptual development and in infancy in general.

In order for infants to make sense of the world they have to perceive it, and research into the development of sensory and perceptual abilities is one of the most exciting and important areas of infancy research.Originally published in 1998, the aim of this book was both to reflect current knowledge of perceptual development and to point to some of the many questions that remained unanswered at the time. The study of perceptual development is now a sophisticated science. The majority of the chapters tell a fascinating detective story: the way in which infants perceive and understand the world as they develop. Each of the major sections is prefaced by introductory comments, and the book will still be useful for advanced undergraduates, postgraduates, researchers, and other professionals who have an interest in early perceptual development and in infancy in general.

Originally published in 1989, Infant Development provided detailed, up-to-date and authoritative accounts of major areas of infant development at the time. The book is subdivided into three sections: Perceptual Development; Cognitive Development; Social Interaction, Early Language and Emotion. The chapters are written by researchers who were internationally recognised authorities on the areas in which they contribute. While written by different contributors the book is a well-integrated account of current developments in our understanding of infant development.Infant Development presupposes no detailed knowledge of infancy on the part of the reader, but at the same time the reader is guided to an understanding of the topical and lively controversies that represent the current state of the art which make the field of infant development such an interesting area of study. Today it can be read in its historical context.
