Media and Politics in Contemporary Italy is the first book to provide a comprehensive examination of the media system in Italy during the last twenty years. Seeing the rise of new political actors and the growing role of the Internet and social media, the general elections of February 2013 have symbolically closed a twenty-year period of Italian history dominated by Silvio Berlusconi politically and by television as channel of political communication. The analysis focuses on change and continuity with past media structures, cultures and practices, and considers the “Berlusconi factor,” namely the impact of one man on the country’s media system, journalism, and political communication.

Screen Encounters with Britain explores how global streaming platforms are reshaping viewing patterns and audience encounters, using the circulation, consumption and reception of British films and TV shows in European markets as a case study.Focusing on young audiences in Denmark, Germany, Italy and the Netherlands, the book provides original audience insights drawing on a wide range of methods, including a survey, digital diaries and interviews and offers a critical perspective on the evolving nature of young audiences' engagement with longform screen content. The evidence presented points towards re-asserted Anglo-American dominance, driven by the power of large US-owned platforms and English as the language of advantage. Building on these findings, the book challenges established theory around the ‘home advantage’ of domestic media and rethinks linguistic and cultural proximity. This volume will appeal to scholars and students researching transnational media, audience studies, screen production studies, media industries and youth studies. More broadly, the book will be of interest to scholars and students of the political economy of the media within the social sciences and humanities.

Challenges and Developments in Public Service Journalism, the 11th RIPE Reader, examines the role of public service journalism, as well as the opportunities and challenges of delivering it in today’s increasingly complex and competitive digital media environment. The volume is organised in three parts: ‘Normative frameworks’; ‘Platform Power, Artificial Intelligence and Public Service Journalism’; and ‘National and Regional Cases’ in Europe and beyond – especially Africa, Asia and India. The book addresses the formidable challenges facing public service journalism in the digital media ecology and provides rich and insightful analyses based on empirical research with findings that are relevant for policy interventions, developing organisational strategy, and for applied practice.

This open-access volume argues that in a functioning democracy, citizens should be equally capable of making informed choices about matters of social importance. This includes citizens accessing all relevant information and knowledge necessary for informed will formation. In today's complex era of digital disruption, it is not enough to simply speak about communication or even digital rights. The starting point for this volume is the need for 'epistemic equality'.The contributors seek to showcase the history and diversity of current debates around communication and digital rights, as precursors for the need for epistemic rights; both as a theoretical concept and an empirically assessed benchmark. The book highlights scholarship via academic case studies from around the world to feature different issues and methodological approaches, as well as similarities in academic and policy challenges across the globe. The goal is to provide an overview of issues that depict challenges to epistemic rights, extract both academic and applied policy implications of different approaches, and end with a set of recommendations for advancing policy-relevant scholarship on epistemic rights. This volume is intended as the first holistic response to an urgent need to address epistemic rights of communication as a central public policy issue, as an academic analytical concept, as well as a central theme for informed public debate. This book is open-access, meaning you have free and unlimited access.
