It is over 20 years since the functional data model and functional programming languages were first introduced to the computing community. Although developed by separate research communities, recent work, presented in this book, suggests there is powerful synergy in their integration. As database technology emerges as central to yet more complex and demanding applications in areas such as bioinformatics, national security, criminal investigations and advanced engineering, more sophisticated approaches like those presented here, are needed.A tutorial introduction by the editors prepares the reader for the chapters that follow, written by leading researchers, including some of the early pioneers. The British National Conference on Databases (BNCOD) was established in 1980 as a forum for research into the theory and practice of databases. This aim remains highly relevant today as database technology must meet the challenges of global applications that need to access and analyse data stored in multiple heterogeneous, autonomous - formation sources on the Web. th This volume contains the proceedings of the 19 BNCOD, held at the University of Shef?eld in July 2002. With the rapid expansion of the Internet over the last 20 years, event-based distributed systems are playing an increasingly important role in a broad range of application domains, including enterprise management, environmental monitoring, information dissemination, finance, pervasive systems, autonomic computing, collaborative working and learning, and geo-spatial systems. Many different architectures, languages and technologies are being used for implementing event-based distributed systems, and much of the development has been undertaken independently by different communities.
