Alfred Schutz – författare

This volume contains a translation of four early manuscripts by Alfred Schutz, unpublished at the time, written between 1924 and 1928. The publication of these four essays adds much to our knowledge and appreciation of the wide range of Schutz’s phenomenological and sociological interests. Originally published in 1987.

The essays consist of: a challenging presentation of a phenomenology of cognition and a treatment of Bergson’s conceptions of images, duration, space time and memory; a discussion of the meanings connected with the grammatical forms of language in general; a consideration of the relation between meaning-contents and literary forms in poetry, literary prose narration and dramatic presentation; and an examination of resemblances and differences in the inner forms and characteristics of the major theatrical art forms.

Alfred Schütz est sans doute l’un des plus grands sociologues du XXe siècle.Ses travaux reposent notamment sur l’analyse des moyens mis en œuvre par les individus pour organiser et comprendre le monde. Parmi les méthodes employées par les hommes pour appréhender leur environnement, la symbolisation est un aspect essentiel de la communication. Elle permet d’imaginer ce qui n’est pas donné à voir de manière immédiate, que ce soient les idées et les intentions d’autrui ou des faits et événements immatériels. Décrite entre autres par G. H. Mead et intégrée dans les travaux de nombreux chercheurs, tels que Howard S. Becker et Erving Goffman, cette symbolisation est un aspect fondamental de l’interaction symbolique, qui constitue le centre de ce recueil de textes. Les divers concepts développés par Schütz et leurs applications pratiques sont encore loin d’avoir été pleinement exploités et son œuvre reste profondément moderne. Outre ses écrits concernant l’interprétation et la symbolisation du monde social, nous avons choisi d’inclure dans ce volume deux articles concernant l’un des aspects plus méconnus de son œuvre : celui d’une réflexion sur l’engagement citoyen. Le présent ouvrage, qui compte parmi les rares à fournir un accès direct aux textes de Schütz pour le lecteur francophone, constitue l’une des meilleures introductions possibles à sa pensée.
