The Reception of the Homeric Hymns is a collection of original essays exploring the reception of the Homeric Hymns and other early hexameter poems in the literature and scholarship of the first century BC and beyond. Although much work has been done on the Hymns over the past few decades, and despite their importance within the Western literary tradition, their influence on authors after the fourth century BC has so far received relatively little attention and there remains much to explore, particularly in the area of their reception in later Greco-Roman literature and art. This volume aims to address this gap in scholarship by discussing a variety of Latin and Greek texts and authors across the late Hellenistic, Imperial, and Late Antique periods, including studies of major Latin authors, such as Virgil, Horace, and Ovid, and Byzantine authors writing in classicizing verse. While much of the book deals with classical reception of the Hymns, including looking beyond the textual realm to their influence on art, the editors and contributors have extended its scope to include discussion of Italian literature of the fifteenth century, German scholarship of the nineteenth century, and the English Romantic poets, demonstrating the enduring legacy of the Homeric Hymns in the literary world.

thales of Miletus (7th-6th centuries BC) is regarded as one of the most important figures in Greek philosophy and science. In spite of this we know few anecdotes about his life, and none of his work has survived directly. This was one of the main reasons behind Andreas Schwab’s work, who for the first time commented on more than one hundred passages in early Christian authors on Thales’ life and works. These are documented in a new collection of testimonies on Thales (Traditio Presocratica vol 1, 2009). Particular attention is paid to the topics of literary discourse and the argumentative contexts within which reference is made to Thales. The commentary is not intended as a reconstruction of Thales’ life and teaching, rather the portrayals of his figure and ideas, as well as their function in later periods are analyzed and commented on with reference to the Christian texts. The Latin texts range from Tertullian to Augustine and Isidore of Seville, the Greek texts from the first apologists to Eusebius of Caesarea and the Chronicle of John Malalas. The interdisciplinary nature of this innovative, diachronous history of Thales’ “image” furthers both research into early Greek philosophy, as well as a deeper understanding of early Christian philosophy and theology.

This book brings to life the artistic and literary community that flourished in Carona, Ticino, from 1968 to 1978. Centered on Swiss artist David Weiss (1946–2012) and his circle of friends, it explores their works, processes, and the communal spirit that fueled artistic experimentation. In the 1920s–30s, Carona attracted figures like Maria Braun, Hermann Hesse, Karl Hofer, Kurt Kläber, Niklaus Stoecklin, Lisa Tetzner, and Lisa Wenger. From 1968 to 1978, Casa Aprile became a gathering place for a new generation of artists and writers. This publication examines the utopian dreams, artistic vitality, and spirit of the era through the work of David Weiss, Esther Altorfer, Anton Bruhin, Maria Gregor, Penelope Margaret Mackworth-Praed, Matthyas Jenny, Urs Lüthi, Meret Oppenheim, Iwan Schumacher, Peter Schweri, and Willy Spiller. Through essays by peers, curators, and critics— drawing from archival materials and oral histories—the book illuminates the artistic community’s legacy, historical context, origins, and evolution while presenting new scholarly findings. The Dream of Casa Aprile reconstructs this collaborative network in a visually rich, playful way, capturing the period’s essence. With texts by Bice Curiger, Stephan Kunz, Virginia Marano, Andreas Schwab, and Stefan Zweifel, and a preface by Tobia Bezzola. Co-published with MASI Lugano in conjunction with the exhibition David Weiss. The Dream of Casa Aprile: Carona 1968–1978 (Sept 28, 2025–Feb 1, 2026). This publication is available in an Italian/German and an Italian/English edition.
