The design and construction of three-dimensional [3-D] object recognition systems has long occupied the attention of many computer vision researchers. The variety of systems that have been developed for this task is evidence both of its strong appeal to researchers and its applicability to modern manufacturing, industrial, military, and consumer environments. 3-D object recognition is of interest to scientists and engineers in several different disciplines due to both a desire to endow computers with robust visual capabilities, and the wide applications which would benefit from mature and robust vision systems. However, 3-D object recognition is a very complex problem, and few systems have been developed for actual production use; most existing systems have been developed for experimental use by researchers only. Computer vision researchers have been frustrated in their attempts to automatically derive depth information from conventional two-dimensional intensity images. Research on "shape from texture", "shape from shading", and "shape from focus" is still in a laboratory stage and had not seen much use in commercial machine vision systems. A range image or a depth map contains explicit information about the distance from the sensor to the object surfaces within the field of view in the scene. Information about "surface geometry" which is important for, say, three-dimensional object recognition is more easily extracted from "2 1/2 D" range images than from "2D" intensity images. As a result, both active sensors such as laser range finders and passive techniques such as multi-camera stereo vision are being increasingly utilized by vision researchers to solve a variety of problems. The past decade has seen a rapid growth in the demand for biometric-based - thentication solutions for a number of applications. The InternationalConference onBiometric Authentication (ICBA 2004)was the ?rst major gathering in the Asia-Paci?c region devoted to facilitating this interaction. Biometric authentication is increasingly gaining popularity in a large spectrum ofapplications,rangingfromgovernmentprograms(e. g. ,nationalIDcards,visas for international travel,and the ?ght against terrorism) to personal applications such as logical and physical access control. Although a number of e?ective - lutions are currently available, new approaches and techniques are necessary to overcomesomeofthelimitationsofcurrentsystemsandtoopenupnewfrontiers in biometric research and development. The 30 papers presented at Biometric Authentication Workshop 2004 (BioAW 2004) provided a snapshot of current research in biometrics, and identify some new trends. This volume is composed of?vesections:facerecognition,?ngerprintrecognition,templateprotectionand security, other biometrics, and fusion and multimodal biometrics. For classical biometrics like ?ngerprint and face recognition, most of the papers in Sect. 1 and 2 address robustness issues in order to make the biometric systems work in suboptimal conditions: examples include face detection and recognition - der uncontrolled lighting and pose variations, and ?ngerprint matching in the case of severe skin distortion.Benchmarking and interoperability of sensors and liveness detection are also topics of primary interest for ?ngerprint-based s- tems. Biometrics alone is not the solution for complex security problems. Some of the papers in Sect. 3 focus on designing secure systems; this requires dealing with safe template storage, checking data integrity, and implementing solutions in a privacy-preserving fashion. The match-on-tokens approach, provided that current accuracy and cost limitations can be satisfactorily solved by using new algorithms and hardware, is certainly a promising alternative. This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the International Conference on Biometrics, ICB 2006, held in Hong Kong, China in January 2006. The 104 revised full papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected from 192 submissions. Biometric criteria covered by the papers are assigned to face, fingerprint, iris, speech and signature, biometric fusion and performance evaluation, gait, keystrokes, and others. In addition, the results of the Face Authentication Competition (FAC 2006) are also announced in this volume.

We would like to welcome you to the proceedings of MRCS 2006, Workshop on Multimedia Content Representation, Classi?cation and Security, held Sept- ber 11–13, 2006, in Istanbul, Turkey. The goal of MRCS 2006 was to provide an erudite but friendly forum where academic and industrial researchers could interact, discuss emerging multimedia techniques and assess the signi?cance of content representation and security techniques within their problem domains. We received more than 190 submissions from 30 countries. All papers were subjected to thorough peer review. The ?nal decisions were based on the cri- cisms and recommendations of the reviewers and the relevance of papers to the goals of the conference. The book offers topical sections on probabilistic models and estimation; image modeling and synthesis; clustering, grouping, and segmentation; optimization and graphs; and shapes, curves, surfaces, and templates.

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the International Workshop on Biometric Authentication held in Copenhagen, Denmark, in June 2001 as a satellite event of ECCV 2002. The 19 revised full papers presented were carefully reviewed. The papers are organized in topical sections on face recognition, fingerprint recognition, psychology and biometrics, face detection and localization, gait and signature recognition, and classifiers for recognition.

This book deals with novel machine vision architecture ideas that make real-time projection-based algorithms a reality. The design is founded on raster-mode processing, which is exploited in a powerful and flexible pipeline. We concern ourselves with several image analysis algorithms for computing: projections of gray-level images along linear patterns (i. e. , the Radon transform) and other curved contours; convex hull approximations; the Hough transform for line and curve detection; diameters; moments and principal components, etc. Addition­ ally, we deal with an extensive list of key image processing tasks, which involve generating: discrete approximations of the inverse Radon transform operator; computer tomography reconstructions; two-dimensional convolutions; rotations and translations; multi-color digital masks; the discrete Fourier transform in polar coordinates; autocorrelations, etc. Both the image analysis and image processing algorithms are supported by a similar architecture. We will also of some of the above algorithms to the solution of demonstrate the applicability various industrial visual inspection problems. The algorithms and architectural ideas surveyed here unleash the power of the Radon and other non-linear transformations for machine vision applications. We provide fast methods to transform images into projection space representa­ tions and to backtrace projection-space information into the image domain. The novelty of this approach is that the above algorithms are suitable for implementa­ tion in a pipeline architecture. Specifically, random access memory and other dedicated hardware components which are necessary for implementation of clas­ sical techniques are not needed for our algorithms.

This book contains papers presented at the NATO Advanced Research Workshop on "Real-time Object and Environment Measurement and Classification" held in Hotel Villa del Mare, Maratea, Italy, August 31 - September 3, 1987. This workshop was organized under the NATO Special Programme on Sensory Systems for Robotic Control. Professor Eric Backer, Delft University of Technology, The Netherlands and Professor Erdal Panayirci, Technical University of Istanbul, Turkey were the members of the organizing committee for this workshop. There were four major themes of this workshop: Real-time Requirements, Feature Measurement, Object Representation and Recognition, and Architecture for Measurement and Classification. A total of twenty-five technical presentations were made. These talks covered a wide spectrum of topics including hardware implementation of specific vision algorithms, a complete vision system for object tracking and inspection, using three cameras (trinocular stereo) for feature measurement, neural network for object recognition, integration of CAD (Computer-Aided Design) and vision systems, and the use of pyramid architectures for solving varioos computer vision problems.
