The development of technologies for the identi?cation of individuals has driven the interest and curiosity of many people. Spearheaded and inspired by the Bertillon coding system for the classi?cation of humans based on physical measurements, scientists and engineers have been trying to invent new devices and classi?cation systems to capture the human identity from its body measurements. One of the main limitations of the precursors of today’s biometrics, which is still present in the vast majority of the existing biometric systems, has been the need to keep the device in close contact with the subject to capture the biometric measurements. This clearly limits the applicability and convenience of biometric systems. This book presents an important step in addressing this limitation by describing a number of methodologies to capture meaningful biometric information from a distance. Most materials covered in this book have been presented at the International Summer School on Biometrics which is held every year in Alghero, Italy and which has become a ?agship activity of the IAPR Technical Committee on Biometrics (IAPR TC4). For the last ten years, face biometric research has been intensively studied by the computer vision community. Face recognition systems have been used in mobile, banking, and surveillance systems. For face recognition systems, face spoofing attack detection is a crucial stage that could cause severe security issues in government sectors. Although effective methods for face presentation attack detection have been proposed so far, the problem is still unsolved due to the difficulty in the design of features and methods that can work for new spoofing attacks. In addition, existing datasets for studying the problem are relatively small which hinders the progress in this relevant domain.In order to attract researchers to this important field and push the boundaries of the state of the art on face anti-spoofing detection, we organized the Face Spoofing Attack Workshop and Competition at CVPR 2019, an event part of the ChaLearn Looking at People Series. As part of this event, we released the largest multi-modal face anti-spoofing dataset so far, the CASIA-SURF benchmark. The workshop reunited many researchers from around the world and the challenge attracted more than 300 teams. Some of the novel methodologies proposed in the context of the challenge achieved state-of-the-art performance. In this manuscript, we provide a comprehensive review on face anti-spoofing techniques presented in this joint event and point out directions for future research on the face anti-spoofing field.

Many applications in government,airport, commercial, defense and law enfor- mentareashaveabasicneedforautomaticauthenticationofhumansbothlocally orremotelyonaroutinebasis.Thedemandforautomaticauthenticationsystems using biometrics, including face, ?ngerprint, gait, and iris, has been increasing in many aspects of life. The purpose of the 2007 International Conference on Biometrics (ICB 2007) was to provide a platform for researchers, engineers, s- tem architects and designers to report recent advances and exchange ideas in the area of biometrics and related technologies. ICB 2007 received a large number of high-quality research papers. In all 303 papers were submitted from 29 countries around the world. Of these 34 papers were accepted for oral presentation and 91 papers were accepted for poster presentation. The program consisted of seven oral sessions, three poster sessions, two tutorial sessions, and four keynote speeches on various topics on biometrics. We would like to thank all the authors who submitted their manuscripts to the conference, and all the members of the Program Committee and reviewers who spent valuable time providing comments on each paper.
