With their introduction in 1995, Support Vector Machines (SVMs) marked the beginningofanewerainthelearningfromexamplesparadigm.Rootedinthe Statistical Learning Theory developed by Vladimir Vapnik at AT&T, SVMs quickly gained attention from the pattern recognition community due to a n- beroftheoreticalandcomputationalmerits.Theseinclude, forexample, the simple geometrical interpretation of the margin, uniqueness of the solution, s- tistical robustness of the loss function, modularity of the kernel function, and over?t control through the choice of a single regularization parameter. Like all really good and far reaching ideas, SVMs raised a number of - terestingproblemsforboththeoreticiansandpractitioners.Newapproachesto Statistical Learning Theory are under development and new and more e?cient methods for computing SVM with a large number of examples are being studied. Being interested in the development of trainable systems ourselves, we decided to organize an international workshop as a satellite event of the 16th Inter- tional Conference on Pattern Recognition emphasizing the practical impact and relevance of SVMs for pattern recognition.By March 2002, a total of 57 full papers had been submitted from 21 co- tries.Toensurethehighqualityofworkshopandproceedings,theprogramc- mitteeselectedandaccepted30ofthemafterathoroughreviewprocess.Ofthese papers16werepresentedin4oralsessionsand14inapostersession.Thepapers span a variety of topics in pattern recognition with SVMs from computational theoriestotheirimplementations.Inadditiontotheseexcellentpresentations, there were two invited papers by Sayan Mukherjee, MIT and Yoshua Bengio, University of Montreal.

Many applications in government, airport, commercial, defense and law enfor- mentareashaveabasicneedforautomaticauthenticationofhumansbothlocally orremotelyonaroutinebasis.Thedemandforautomaticauthenticationsystems using biometrics, including face, ?ngerprint, gait, and iris, has been increasing in many aspects of life. The purpose of the 2007 International Conference on Biometrics (ICB 2007) was to provide a platform for researchers, engineers, s- tem architects and designers to report recent advances and exchange ideas in the area of biometrics and related technologies. ICB 2007 received a large number of high-quality research papers. In all 303 papers were submitted from 29 countries around the world. Of these 34 papers were accepted for oral presentation and 91 papers were accepted for poster presentation. The program consisted of seven oral sessions, three poster sessions, two tutorial sessions, and four keynote speeches on various topics on biometrics. We would like to thank all the authors who submitted their manuscripts to the conference, and all the members of the Program Committee and reviewers who spent valuable time providing comments on each paper. We would like to thank the conference administrator and secretariat for making the conference successful. We also wish to acknowledge the IEEE, IAPR, Korea Information Science Society, Korea University, Korea University BK21 Software Research Division, KoreaScience and EngineeringFoundation,KoreaUniversity Institute of Computer, Information and Communication, Korea Biometrics Association, Lumidigm Inc., Ministry of Information and Communication Republic of Korea, and Springer for sponsoring and supporting this conference. August 2007 Seong-Whan Lee Stan Z. Li Organization ICB 2007 was organized by Center for Arti?cial Vision Research, Korea University.

For ‘Recent Progress in Brain and Cognitive Engineering’Brain and Cognitive Engineering is a converging study field to derive a better understanding of cognitive information processing in the human brain, to develop “human-like” and neuromorphic artificial intelligent systems and to help predict and analyze brain-related diseases. The key concept of Brain and Cognitive Engineering is to understand the Brain, to interface the Brain, and to engineer the Brain. It could help us to understand the structure and the key principles of high-order information processing on how the brain works, to develop interface technologies between a brain and external devices and to develop artificial systems that can ultimately mimic human brain functions. The convergence of behavioral, neuroscience and engineering research could lead us to advance health informatics and personal learning, to enhance virtual reality and healthcare systems, and to “reverse engineer” some brain functions and build cognitive robots. In this book, four different recent research directions are presented: Non-invasive Brain-Computer Interfaces, Cognitive- and Neural-rehabilitation Engineering, Big Data Neurocomputing, Early Diagnosis and Prediction of Neural Diseases. We cover numerous topics ranging from smart vehicles and online EEG analysis, neuroimaging for Brain-Computer Interfaces, memory implantation and rehabilitation, big data computing in cultural aspects and cybernetics to brain disorder detection. Hopefully this will provide a valuable reference for researchers in medicine, biomedical engineering, in industry and academia for their further investigations and be inspiring to those who seek the foundations to improve techniques and understanding of the Brain and Cognitive Engineeringresearch field.

In recent years, rapid progress has been made in computer processing of oriental languages, and the research developments in this area have resulted in tremendous changes in handwriting processing, printed oriental character recognition, document analysis and recognition, automatic input methodologies for oriental languages, etc. Advances in computer processing of oriental languages can also be seen in multimedia computing and the World Wide Web. Many of the results in those domains are presented in this book.
