This book is intended for urologists and pathologists who practice in an office setting. In this setting, bladder and prostate diseases are most commonly encountered. Therefore, bladder and prostate biopsy and urine cytology specimens are frequently obtained by urologists, which require pathologists’ assistance to interpret. In the office setting, communication between urologists and pathologists becomes feasible, which is paramount for accurate diagnosis and better patient management. For this purpose, this book includes clinically relevant information for pathologists, concise pathology terminology, and diagnostic tests for urologists. This book describes the common clinical and pathological entities, and is written in a bullet format for easy and quick reference. For visual review, over 150 diagrams, histologic images, and other images are included. The first and second chapters describe bladder and prostate diseases, focusing on clinical-pathological correlation. Therefore, this book is also useful for pathology and urology residents in training, in preparation for board examination(s), or as a refresher reference for recertification. The third chapter is dedicated to office-based pathology laboratory services, which outlines laboratory instrumentation, procedures, and regulatory requirements. This information is useful for urologists and pathologists who are involved in the management of an office-based pathology laboratory. The past decade has seen a rapid growth in the demand for biometric-based - thentication solutions for a number of applications. With signi?cant advances in biometrictechnologyandanincreaseinthenumberofapplicationsincorporating biometrics, it is essential that we bring together researchers from academia and industry as well as practitioners to share ideas, problems and solutions for the development and successful deployment of state-of-the-art biometric systems. The InternationalConference onBiometric Authentication (ICBA 2004)was the ?rst major gathering in the Asia-Paci?c region devoted to facilitating this interaction. We are pleased that this conference attracted a large number of high-quality research papers that will bene?t the international biometrics - search community. After a careful review of 157 submissions, 101 papers were acceptedeitherasoral(35)orposter(66)presentations.Inadditiontothesete- nical presentations, this conference also presented the results and summaries of threebiometric competitions: FingerprintVeri?cationCompetition (FVC 2004), Face Authentication Competition (FAC 2004), and Signature Veri?cation C- petition (SVC 2004).This conference provided a forum for the practitioners to discuss their practical experiences in applying the state-of-the-art biometric technologies which will further stimulate research in biometrics. Automatic and reliable authentication of individuals is becoming an essential part of the modern world, for security and convenience in our life, in our work andin society.Biometrics-basedsystems utilize physiologicalorbehavioralch- acteristics of an individual including the face, iris, ?ngerprint, palmprint, hand, voice, signature, or a combination of them, for this task. We are now seeing increasing interest and practical deployment of biometric systems. TheInternationalWorkshoponBiometricRecognitionSystems(IWBRS2005) was held in conjunction with ICCV 2005, providing an interactive forum for leading biometrics researchersand system designers.A biometric authentication competition (BAC) was conducted by the workshopto track the state-of-the-art biometrics technologies. This volume of workshop proceedings includes 32 papers carefully selected from a total of 130 submissions. The papers address the problems in face, iris, ?ngerprint, palmprint, speech, writing and other biometrics, and contribute new ideastoresearchanddevelopmentofreliableandpracticalsolutionsforbiometric authentication.We would like to express our gratitude to all the contributors, reviewers, and ProgramCommittee and OrganizingCommittee members who made this a very successful workshop. This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the International Conference on Biometrics, ICB 2006, held in Hong Kong, China in January 2006. The 104 revised full papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected from 192 submissions. Biometric criteria covered by the papers are assigned to face, fingerprint, iris, speech and signature, biometric fusion and performance evaluation, gait, keystrokes, and others. In addition, the results of the Face Authentication Competition (FAC 2006) are also announced in this volume.

The past decade has seen a rapid growth in the demand for the usage of behavioral and physiological characteristics of humans for e-security and forensics applications. The significant advances in the biometrics techniques are increasingly incorporated in a number of other applications. In this context, medicine has emerged as the largest and most promising area. Medical biometrics primarily refers to the usage of beh- ioral and physiological characteristics of humans for medical diagnosis and body care. Thus the goal of medical biometrics is to explore solutions to the open problems in medicine using biometric measurements, technologies and systems. The International Conference on Medical Biometrics (ICMB 2008) was the first major gathering in the world devoted to facilitating this interaction. We are pleased that this conference attracted a large number of high-quality research papers that will benefit international medical biometrics research. After a careful review process, 40 papers were accepted either for oral (17) or poster (23) presentations. In addition to these technical presentations, this conference also held a workshop on Computerized Traditional C- nese Medicine. Our efforts are focused to generating awareness among researchers, organizing researchers to foster research in this area, and providing a common platform for discussion and investigation. This conference provided a forum for discussing prac- cal experiences in applying the state-of-the-art biometric tecnologies for medical diag- sis and body care, which will further stimulate research in medical biometrics.
