Curatorial Challenges investigates the challenges faced by curators in contemporary society and explores which practices, ways of thinking, and types of knowledge production curating exhibitions could challenge. Bringing together international curators and researchers from the fields of art and cultural history, the book provides new research and perspectives on the curatorial process and aims to bridge the traditional gap between theoretical and academic museum studies and museum practices.The book focuses on exhibitions as a primary site of cultural exchange and argues that, as highly visible showcases, producers of knowledge, and historically embedded events, exhibitions establish and organize meanings of art and cultural heritage. Temporary exhibitions continue to increase in cultural significance and yet the traditional role of the museum as a Bildung institution has changed. As exhibitions gain in significance, so too do curatorial strategies. Historiemedvetandet har skiftat mellan olika tider beroende på sociala, ekonomiska, politiska och teknologiska villkor. Dessa skiften har sin grund i olika historiografiska praktiker, minnestekniker och minnesfunktioner, och historiografin och minnet måste därmed själva historiseras. För att förstå historiemedvetandets förändringar blir det därför avgörande att undersöka vilka medier, tekniker och historiografiska praktiker som har använts för att göra en plats meningsfull genom att tilldela den en historia och därmed göra den minnesbärande. På så sätt kan platsen betecknas som ett monument, ett kulturarv eller en minnesinstitution och därmed skiljas från andra platser. Monumentet och dess gränsdragningar är centrala i hela den västliga estetiken, från skulpturens sockel till måleriets ram, men också i religiösa praktiker, inom institutioner som museet samt i hemmet. Dessa tekniker och praktiker för minnes- och historieproduktion är ofta omdebatterade och sociala, ekonomiska, politiska och teknologiska villkor skapar både möjligheter och sätter gränser för historiemedvetandet under en viss epok så även vår egen. I "Minne, medier och materialitet", som är den tredje fristående delen i trebandsverket "Historiens hemvist", fokuserar fjorton forskare på minnespolitiska och historiografiska implikationer och mediala praktiker. De utgår från museer, arkiv, litterära och konstnärliga gestaltningar, liksom från rymden, i sina försök att tydliggöra de historiografiska praktikernas påverkan på vårt historiemedvetande och således på vårt sätt att minnas och förstå medier, platser och föremål som minnesbärande "monument". Volymen är redigerad av Johan Hegardt, docent i arkeologi och forskare vid Institutionen för kultur och lärande, Södertörns högskola, och Trond Lundemo, docent i filmvetenskap vid Institutionen för mediestudier, Stockholms universitet, båda knutna till forskningsprogrammet "Tid, minne, representation".
