À partir d’une relecture du Faust de Goethe, cet essai s’attache à suivre le chemin de crête conduisant d’un sommet de la métaphysique allemande à l’autre avant de faire halte dans le lyrisme hölderlinien. L’objectif de cette pérégrination est d’interroger à nouveaux frais la complicité inédite qui se noue dans l’idéalisme allemand entre la rénovation indissociablement critique et métaphysique du « possible » et les actes imaginatifs par lesquels les auteurs de cette tradition ont affirmé leur liberté contingente de s’inventer moderne. Entre les deux se glisse l’ombre de Méphistophélès et d’une négativité intransigeante avec laquelle il leur a fallu composer, assumant chacun à sa manière les conséquences du « pacte » qu’il aura signé avec elle. À rebours de la fascination si fortement réactivée aujourd’hui, de part et d’autre du « divide » analytique/continental, pour l’autosuffisance logico-discursive du discours philosophique, les coupes transversales du moment classique allemand proposées ici visent à réveiller la dimension essentiellement problématique du geste réflexif. Chemin faisant, c’est tout à la fois la force et la précarité de notre imagination configuratrice d’un monde habitable et partageable qui se voit repensée dans sa foncière indétermination.
